Thanks Tom for the update! I’ve been avoiding that area due to the construction. 🙀
Traffic circles are the evil work of the Satsnic Devil.
Anxious to see how it works. Still think a 4 way stop would have been cheaper and more effective. Traffic circles are fine on secondary roads but on main thoroughfares not as effective unless they are as large as The Peanut.
Roundabouts REDUCE the types of crashes where people are seriously hurt or killed by 78-82% when compared to conventional stop-controlled and signalized intersections, per the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual.
I live on Day Avenue and this is a nightmare.
The circle is already causing increased cut through traffic on Day because it is the easiest entry point to 32nd. SMH.
Traffic circles are a nightmare for pedestrians. Since the cars do not have to stop you are taking your life in your hands trying to cross as they speed around the circle.
I agree with the above comment about how traffic circles are so dangerous for pedestrians. They interrupt the flow of sidewalks and force us to walk through a small space which drivers coming right through.
At least stop signs bring traffic to an actual halt while we cross the street (most of the time!). The only sign placed on circles is that they should "yield" to other traffic in the circle, which I have found causes a lot of drivers to go through anyway if they think they can pass us with room to spare.
I'm actually the person who asked the county for that traffic circle 8 years ago and this is why I did and still believe it a great improvement. For the last 20 or so years there have been one or two accidents at that intersection every month. These are just the ones that happened while I was home and could hear them. I always go out to the street to see if anyone is badly hurt and quite often there are serious injuries requiring help and an ambulance. I kept trying to figure out what was so special about that intersection and finally figured it out through interviews with the people who crashed and from observation. The stop signs leading to the intersection are mostly 4 way stops. Then that one is a simple stop and many people believe that the McDonald cars will stop. This coupled with the fact that people in Miami don't understand how stops work causes some very violent accidents. The traffic circle forces traffic from all 4 sides to slow way down. To those of you that have not looked up what the rules of a traffic circle are, they are simple:
You yield to the vehicles already in the circle. Since this circle is rather small and the chance of two vehicles arriving at the same time are high then you use the right of way rule which gives it to the vehicle to your right. That means that you let the vehicle to your right go first. To the people for who'm these rules are just too complicated then may I suggest walking as cycling probably requires much more coordination and thought than you are likely to muster. To the poster that was suggesting that a traffic circle was creating more traffic on Day Ave than the stop sign, I suggest you revisit your observations and logic and make sure and swallow liquids more slowly to avoid drowning.
Time will tell if the accidents are lessened but the only way the circle could make them worse is if a sniper hid in it's bushes and shot at people so I'm standing by the change.
