A note regarding Ultra from Comm. Russell
When Virginia Key was recommended as a potential location for the Ultra Music Festival, I voted against it. I was concerned about the potential impacts to the environment and on traffic and noise. Unfortunately, these were some of the challenges experienced on its first day.
I have been in contact with our city manager, police and fire chiefs as well as festival management regarding the challenges we experienced the first night of the event. Changes to the transportation plan are being implemented today.
I’m hopeful that plan will prevent the disruptions experienced yesterday and early this morning. I will continue to work with our committed City of Miami police and fire professionals and Ultra to ensure that our residents and festival attendees are safe.
Ultra must do a better job working with the City of Miami to address the serious issues we experienced.
If you have concerns, please reach out to my office at krussell@miamigov.com.

We'll see. I notice that this post doesn't recommend that the Festival be moved away from this area. I notice that the post doesn't't address the extensive environmental impact that the Festival caused, which he said was originally imprortant to him. It has been the experience of quite a few of his constituents that we don't receive responses to emails or phone calls.

It is very sad that residents are not embracing Ultra more. Ultra is a worldwide staple. It puts Miami on the map for the modern music category as much as Rio does with Carnaval.
It should remain on the water. If the state of Rio restricted Carnaval to the suburb of Tijuca inland, I doubt you would get the same global pull.
Putting in a hiphop concert at Bayfront park the month following Ultra is what really drove residents with the lawsuit. Not so much racism, but having a urban hiphop crowd. However, the new downtown residents won their NIMBY request even though Ultra had been there years before.
As far as environmental damage, I think that is a bit of a hypocrisy. People who live in an area built over mangroves and swamp wetlands should not throw stones from a glass house. At least any damage from Ultra is restorable.
I will leave the environmentalists to determine the impact and damage the festival causes or doesn't cause. However I do have a problem with the noise the festival creates. I live on Wakeena Dr which is at least 5 or 6 blocks off the water and across the bay. On Friday and Saturday night we could here the bass from the festival in hour home. Keep in mind that we have impact windows which minimizes the noise. I could only imagine the noise felt by those closer to the water and those without impact windows. This event needs to be held in either the Miccosukee or Seminole land. It should be like Burning Man, far from everything else that way it doesn't bother anyone. As for putting Miami on the map I call bull on that. Miami doesn't need Ultra to put it on the map. Miami is Miami and will continue to be the Magic City with or without Ultra. Noise pollution can kill. Billions spent to power up jet engines to go higher & faster above rooftops. Walls between roadways & homes. Neighbors music & barking dogs, motorcycles, leaf blowers. These are just the tip of the noise pollution ice berg. Stress from noise pollution can kill you and there are those who will kill you for stressing them out with your noise. Be creative and fight back at all levels.
Downtown's population has exploded in recent years, hence why more people are annoyed with the event.
