Turning a passion into a mission

Tom Powers
Tom Powers, a commercial and instrument pilot with over 8,000 flight hours, will speak to the Rotary Club of Coconut Grove on Thursday, January 31.  Powers has had a passion for flying for the past 50 years and is an Aircraft Commander pilot for the USCG Auxiliary flying patrols and Search and Rescue missions. He also flies USCG special logistics missions to Guantanamo, Puerto Rico and other locations.

Powers served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy. Volunteering his own aircraft, time and expenses, he has flown over 1,000 missions in the past 26 years for those in need of medical or humanitarian care.  Many of those are veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam who travel to VA hospitals for care.

He is president of Eagle Risk Management and Flightline Drug Testing, which administers drug abatement programs for Department of Transportation agencies such as the FAA, Federal Railroad, and Trucking. He is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives and is an adjunct professor at Barry University. He is also a past president of the Downtown FT. Lauderdale Rotary Club and AAG for Area 3 District 6990.

The Rotary Club of Coconut Grove meets every Thursday at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, 2990 South Bayshore Drive at 12:30 pm. The cost of the meeting is $25 with lunch or $10 without lunch. Open to the public.
