First challenger to Ken Russell registers

The first challenger to District 2 Commissioner, Ken Russell is in - Javier Gonzalez, local realtor, has registered for next November's race.

Javier would like to see changes in Coconut Grove and District 2, he says it's complicated and didn't get specific, but says, "It’s a build up of so many things that makes you realize that there needs to be a change in District 2 and the way it’s managed.”

Here's hoping it's not too late for that. As things stand now, the Grove is a mess with the over-development, blocked streets, massive traffic jams and diminishing quality of life.

I've met Javier, nice guy, but there's not much a new District 2 Commissioner can for the Grove in these areas:

The "over-development" already happened. Are they gonna knock any buildings down? The traffic can only get worse in time: that's not just The Grove, but Miami in general, the population keeps going up.

The Grove is nearly a finished product by now. Especially Central grove and North Grove. What else can they build? West Grove will be the next target for over-development. But, hey, let's face it, it ain't so pretty right now as it stands.

Eventually, the dust will settle and construction has to stop. People move in and out, or change routes and hours to avoid traffic. The waterviews were mostly blocked, what's left is private property. Bayshore Drive is what it is, ain't gonna change much.

Aspiring new Commissioners should be way more specific as to what, exactly, they intend to accomplish: I say build a big park full of trees on West Grove, huh? Try that.

I'd settle for any commissioner that actually picks up the phone and talks to her or his constituents, instead of pretending to be so important that he hides behind his interns. Ken has got to go!

Ken isn't the problem...the issues with which we're dealing come to rest at the doorstep of one Mark Sarnoff.

This is great news. I whole-heartedly agree with Charlie Brown's sentiment. In my personal experience, Russell's office is woefully unresponsive -- especially the Coconut Grove team, unless you are part of his West Grove base. The office's constituent services are pathetic, there's no other way to put it. Say what you will about Sarnoff (although I don't understand how the commenter at 11:10 attributes all "issues" to him - seems a bit simple minded), but he and his office got stuff done. Nothing could be further from the truth for Russell. I am happy to see a challenger step up. On top of all this, Javier is fantastic, has a proven record of public interest, and would be a great commissioner. I'm in.
