Kens Russell's new restoration project

OK, here's a project you may want to get into - saving this Bahamian Shotgun home in Village West.

District Commissioner Ken Russell has started a GoFundMe page to do it. The page is to raise money for restoration, not to purchase the house.

"The owner has offered to sell me the house for $1.00. The rest will go toward moving it and restoring it. This means a lot to me. If you want to help me raise funds, ask to join team Grove Love on gofundme," says Ken.

The goal is $100,000. This is a personal project, it has nothing to do with the city or Ken's office. I like the idea, so I am sharing it here.

The GoFundMe page is here.

I'm not suspicious, just wondering. If these two units are on a single lot and a single lot, just about anywhere Grove, is worth about $500,000.00, why would the owner sell for $1.00? If Ken's group funding project hopes to raise $100,000.00, to move and restore, a rough guess is a cost of what, say $350.000.00? And put where, in the Grove where the average lot price is about $500,000.00. I believe I've thought I saw this exact picture in the Grape this year, but I searched and couldn't find it. I seem to remember these units belonged to someone, a developer, described as being from Coral Gables, but trying to get a foothold in the Grove. Will this project translate into some form of tax write-off, and if so who cares? Just wondering because the math is hard to comprehend.

He says he’s not buyythe real estate- he’s buying the structure. That’s the whole point. To move and preserve

Of course the owner would sell the houses for $1.00 to avoid paying for permitting and demolition! Ken would be doing the developer a favor! For F's-sake there is no local public land whose value warrants their re-location...Ken, who is not adverse to a public land give-away may want to put them in our parks...Someone should show Ken all the stupid ideas the more erudite NYC leadership had to consider and wisely rejected regarding Central Park. I wrote the 1st comment 12:50 PM, wanting to remain anon. It's 3:06 AM 10/14/2018 & I was awakened by my own question being answered. I Googled the Grape and you guys came to the same conclusion. My brain tossed this about and I awakened thinking, of course, once the units are moved, presto, the land has been cleared and ready for development. Now my question is, is this just good business or is this sleazy complicity with the property owner. Is this property owned by a guy who also constructed that big white monster on Charles Street?

Great idea. Interesting that, as of this writing, it does not appear that Commissioner Yo-Yo has even donated to the Go Fund Me page he started.

This lot is probably worth between $250K to $350K at that location. Developer could have easily demolished it for about $4K if s/he didn't want to cooperate with Ken. While s/he will be saving a few buck in demo costs, I still think it is a good step from him/her and excellent move by Ken Russell. I suggested this solution 3-4 months ago at a public meeting about these homes and they didn't seem to like it then. There are many places these homes can be moved to in Coconut Grove, public and private. They will be restored and then saved forever. I don't understand the opposition to this move. Funds are raised by private citizens and even if these homes were moved to a public park, what is the harm in seeing a piece of the history when we walk our dog or jog?

I think the subject matter that oozed out is (1) Who owns this property? (2) The math does not add up. (3) Is this just a pollical end run? (4) Who profits? (5) Is this just a charade to clear this property for development?

This is a political move.Looks good on the press and create some noise like Robin Hood type of noise.Reality may be different you just not move houses around like thad , there is legal ramifications like ownerships, taxes, Maintenance , liability, permits, water , sewer and more. Will see how many supporters will jump on this train.

I say not more than $1,000.00, will be raised. It make no sense logically or financially. I don't understand the motive.
