Electric scooters could be coming back

A construction worker gets around on a scooter.
The Bird and Lime scooters and maybe some others may be hitting Grove streets again, soon.

A pilot program will allow the scooters to be used in District 2 neighborhoods like the Grove and Brickell.

Electric scooters started popping up around the village in June. People loved them or hated them. Those who rode them loved them, those who didn't understand them hated them. They eventually were carted off because there was no city ordinance allowing them to operate, they were not licensed.

I am a supporter. I think they are efficient, alleviate the parking problems and add a lot of energy to the neighborhood. People used them to make quick runs to pick up lunch and just to relieve stress during the day. I've even seen the ubiquitous construction workers using them to get around town.

Now under legislation drafted by district Commissioner Ken Russell, any scooter company can pay a $50,000 fee and apply for a license. They will also be regulated now and the quantity could be controlled. In the past, they were just popping up on every corner.

One major complaint is that people just drop off the scooters anywhere when they are done with them. The Grove is an obstacle course these days anyway, so I'm guessing that is not the biggest issue currently.

I knew Ken would bring them back when I saw him riding one the first day they appeared on the streets. Foreshadowing.

The first reading of this issue will be brought up before the City Commission on September 13.

Freebees, trolleys, buses, Ubers, bicycles and scooters. It's getting easier to maneuver the village these days as lack of parking becomes more and more of an issue.

Scooter accidents are on the rise per CNN. Given the habits of Miami drivers I would issue a warning to all contemplating renting one.

Notice I-95 and motorcycles. I've never seen a motorcycle, not a scooter operator who display an ounce of intelligence. And their riders, normally a female are propped up much, much higher than the driver. Imagine the accident and her going head over heels into the asphalt. Now, back to these electrical scooters. Dim witted, low IQ, hello? I see many Grand Avenue locals thinking they have authority and power scooting down Grand Avenue into local traffic into downtown Coconut Grove and traffic. Not a concern about head injuries, just, LOOK AT ME BEING STUPID.
