Was there ever any doubt?
Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon, Vice Chairman Ken Russell and District 3 Commissioner Joe Carollo voted in favor. District 1 Commissioner Wifredo "Willy" Gort and District 4 Commissioner Manolo Reyes voted against.
It was believe that Ken would vote no, as the swing vote, but apparently he feels that renting out city parkland is the way to go.
There is a lawsuit which was filed early Wednesday, which states that the city is breaking its own laws by not sending the project out for bidding.
Also, there is that nasty business of the park being toxic.

When the Commissioner of the local district votes NO. That's a sign of a bad deal .,,!?$$$$$$#@#$$$
Huge disappointment.
I thought Ken Russell was pro-parks. I was wrong.
What's next - office buildings in Peacock Park? Apartments in Kennedy Park?
Make no mistake, this has set a very bad precedent.
Soon the propaganda BS campaign will begin by the billionaire team behind this.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had commissioners who saw park land as sacred ground to be protected and preserved?

Never a doubt in my mind It was great political showmanship but, in the end, it's all about the money and the press. When the commissioner in the district most impacted votes "no" and makes a cogent case for that vote, it is sad that the other commissioners won't support that decision. What if they had wanted to vote in C Grove? What would Russell have done then ?? He may represent the Grove but he is responsible to all citizens of Miami.
Since when is Melreese Country Club a park? You have to be a member and can't even walk the course. From the designs I saw of Miami Freedom Park it appears that it will have more green space than it has now, and will be usable by the citizenry...not just golfers
Agree totally with Mr. Cruz. I'm seething over this and your title was right - was there ever any doubt! Very disappointing about Ken Russell selling out which proves that he is as wimpy as some describe him. Or, was his campaign not based on truisms? We believed in him and voted for him and now this?! :(
Melreese is a PUBLIC course. You can purchase a premier member card, used at 21 courses in SFL, if you play frequently and want to get a reduced rate. As for not being able to walk the course, that is an unfortunate traffic control decision now in effect at many/most courses.
I am so angry that no one is listening to the public. I keep reading about this being everyone's "legacy" for Miami. Oh bull! How about for their egos!
Does anyone realize you will NOT be able to get to the airport to catch a flight OR come home from a flight through all the traffic. What a joke! This is not about soccer or golf, but about being sensible, about park land staying park land.
And because I pay Coral Gables taxes, and yet have Coconut Grove zip code, I won't be able to vote NO in November. Everyone in Miami-Dade should be able to vote because it affects ALL of us.
In politics is doesn't do any good to just get mad. When a politician screws you the way that Ken Russell screwed everyone other than Francis Suarez and the money interests, you don't stay mad, you get even.
Whether its a Recall effort, or a campaign - with a candidate that folks can support - next year, one way or another the only way to pay back Ken Russell is to vote his ass out of office.
Understand, this is a guy for wasn't in office a hot minute before he went off to Philadelphia to hob nob with all the famous TV reporters and politicians and came back so full of himself that decided he wanted to run for Congress.
Then he did a bunch of stupid shit before deciding that he was going to be the great white hope of the poor black people in the West Grove and has created a truly punishing reality for some of the owners of the wooden houses there before pulling this stunt yesterday.
Conserve your anger for the action it will take to show this weasel prick that payback is a mother----

If the commission wants to represent the public interest, the ballot should also include the option of converting the entire golf course to a traditional park.
Looking at Ken Russell's flipping regarding the Playhouse and now this, its apparent that he's working for those who have a very different interest in what will be Coconut Grove's future...He's no longer representing the Grove, but himself and developers!
Robin, you are 100% correct. He is in bed with the developers, including a real estate guy whose name has not surfaced.
When they speak of Zero loss of Parkland, here comes a switch for the previous purchased stadium land in Overtown???
People hope Nathan Kurland files to run for the Dist 2 seat. Obviously, Ken Russell has been a huge failure.
Give os baaaaaack
Keon Hardemon was no surprise. His aunt took money from Jorge Mas. Keon should have recused himself. (Ha Ha). Ken Russell got played and he played the voters.
