50 homes in Village West to be designated historic?

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson sent a statement to the City Commission on Thursday, requesting that the historic preservation office identify the 50 shotgun homes in Village West to be designated as a historic collection.

Her Chief of Staff, Alexis Snyder read the following to the commission: "As the first Bahamian American elected to the United States Congress, I ask you to join me in celebrating the Bahamian Independence Day that was just two days ago, July 10, 2018, and most importantly the major role that African Bahamians played in establishing Coconut Grove, Miami's and South Florida mainland's first black settlement.

"These Bahamians together with African Americans contributed greatly in the building of the City of Miami, and its incorporation in 1896.

"I look forward to serving as Honorary Chair of a future Bahamian enclave initiative in West Grove."

What a joke. Frederica Wilson is the most incompetent, underachieving member of Congress (and this coming from a card-carrying Democrat!). She is known for her ridiculous bedazzled cowboy hats and has not passed a single piece of legislation. Her endorsement completely highlights the foolishness of the proposed designation.

Obviously the people that are all for this don't own or live in any of those 50 houses. If they did they certainly wouldn't be in favor of the Historic Designation.

Absurd? Why? They have historic corridors in cities that encompass hundreds of homes. 50 is a drop in a bucket.

Is somebody going to pay the owners a fair price for taking them off the market?

That is the craziest thing I have heard in a long time!! Who is going to pay to keep these properties the way they are supposed to be kept if they are historic? Why put this burden on those homeowners?

Why burden anyone with designating a building as historic? Because it is the correct thing to do. In for a dime, in for a dollar.

Ken Russell is pushing it and has no money to pay for anything. It’s insane. Those poor homeowners.

If Ken Russell is pushing this proposal he is backing a very foolish plan in terms of the overall public good!
