The Playhouse needs to be declared historic

The City's Historical and Environmental Preservation Board (HEP) has a meeting on Tuesday, February 6, to discuss the Coconut Grove Playhouse.

On the agenda is the issue of the board voting to recommend that the playhouse be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Now why this has not been done in the past is questionable. And whether they do this on Tuesday will be very telling. The only reason to NOT do it is if they are in the pockets of the developers, i.e. Michael Spring and Miami-Dade County whose plan is to destroy it. But at the last big meeting in December, issues were brought up that could save the playhouse and that has to do with raising enough money to renovate the current structure, rather than the shape of the structure itself. So just that fact alone should be enough to declare the structure sound and historic.

It is not a private residence, which always brings up issues regarding historic designation. But this is a tax payer-owned, county, state owned property. Other than to line the pockets of those who wish to tear it down and rebuild something else, there is no reason to not declare the playhouse an historic gem.

If Michael Spring and his crew show up to fight this, I would say there is something quite fishy about their own agenda and they do not really care about the playhouse at all, they care about lining their pockets, by throwing history away. We see this way to much around here. We need to start preserving what's left in Coconut Grove.

It would be so nice if the taxpayers and the community had their wishes heard. Other than those who would make money on the destruction of the playhouse, there is no sane reason to destroy it. It's all about greed as most things are around here. And anyone who shows up to fight to deny the historic designation is showing their selfishness and greediness and they should not be working for the county and taxpayers since their interest lies with developers and not the taxpayers who pay their salaries.

The meeting is at 3 pm at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive), again, it is Tuesday, February 6.

You may have good reasons to want the Coconut Grove Playhouse to be declared historic, but you do your argument a disservice by maligning the reputation of Michael Spring. Michael has more integrity than anyone you know, and no-one is getting their pockets lined by developers in this deal. Indeed, it has been due to Michael's hard work over many years that the debt fiasco and ownership has been settled and a workable plan for the Playhouse created. You can debate the plan, but please don't think that your opponents have nefarious intentions. Dennis Edwards Coconut Grove

Here we go again... one would think this is the only thing going on in the Grove. Our village is vibrant and exciting. Let's celebrate it and figure ways to make it even better... I have a good idea. How about a community theater? Oh... that's right, it's our last vestige of control so we continue to drill it into the ground through over-analysis until it's condemned and then what are our options?

We have a plan, let's modify it a bit and move forward before all the parties in the agreement back out and then... we have nothing but a crumbling eyesore that even a national historic designation can't solve.

Sad!!!

Our majestic Construction Cranes and delightful Baroque Scaffolds all over Center Grove also need to be declared "Historic", since everything in Miami that's over 100 y/o is deemed "historic".

Michael Spring has integrity? Are you kidding me? He lies to the state, lies to the public, lies to the Grove Village Council, he hired a convicted felon (Ted Bachan) to be head of construction on restoring Overtown's historic Lyric Theater, Bachman was convicted of grand theft and organized fraud while on the job as head of the construction team. And Spring hired him anyway. The New Times did a whole spread on it. Spring gives favoritism to another felon, Arquitectonica, who has no experience in historic preservation. His lies have been video recorded and go back years. He undermines the voters mandate to misuse public funds..He's the most corrupt public official around.

Max, maybe calm down a bit. Your comments are starting to get redundant and whiny (and less productive)
