The Grove is the Libertarians next target
Last night, the Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade County voted unanimously to launch an offensive in Coconut Grove ahead of this November's local election.
The formula is simple. There will be 9 open seats, and every candidate will run on the same ballot. The top nine vote-getters will earn a position on the Coconut Grove Village Council. Statistically, it'll be easier to win than to lose.
We need to recruit, as soon as possible, candidates that will run for the Village Council. If we can get a simple slate of 5 Libertarians from that area, we'll control a majority of the Council in November.
For that effect, we approved a budget of $1,000. Thanks to our negotiations and networking victories, we've estimated that figure will be enough to run successful campaigns. Last year, $300 got us 5 Libertarian elected officials in different similar boards.
And that's where you come in.
I need you to donate. If we can raise the $1,000 within the next week, we'll be able to launch a real offensive in Coconut Grove. Starting now will allow us to be ahead of any other local campaign.
And after this, they ask for donations to help their momentum.
Is this good? Is this nothing, what does it mean? It's like Republicans or Democrats asking for votes for the Coconut Grove Village Council. It's just disconcerting to think that our little village is being called their "Next Target."
Here is the post on the Libertarian blog. There are four Libertarian candidates running for the seats. The Libertarian candidates are Zachary K. Elliott, Sacha DuBearn, Greg Eversole and Eddy Nagy. You can see their pictures here.
The Libertarian party feels that they can clean up government, but as far as I know, the Village Council has never been a corrupt body.
NOTE: Nevada is a "Libertarian state."

I find it disconcerting that they are looking not just for a voice for their cause; but for complete control of the votes. These days we are seeing what uncontested political power in the hands of very few people can do. Even conservative Republicans in deep Red States are now coming out against gerrymandering to steer votes to candidates, instead of steering candidates to the people. That alone makes it suspect to me, not to mention those 5 votes wouldn't reflect any of the diversity of the 33133. I for one will now pay more attention to the people running for the Village Council and what they say they stand for.
Don't candidates need to qualify/register to run by a deadline? For city commission and mayoral races that deadline was 9/23. If so, they missed the boat. I'm not sure if same rules apply.
Thanks for pointing this out. I think the Libertarians can bring a fresh perspective to the issues affecting the Grove.
I agree with "swlip."
The idea of a "group" movement gives me the creeps. And there is a budget set to promote their election.
The Libertarian platform is for small, effective, government. That is always welcomed in my book.
I personally think it's awesome to have people from a wider political spectrum than just the right, or the left getting involved in local politics.
Polarized politics haven't benefited anyone, and some fresh perspective, with an eye on personal freedoms could be a huge boon for the area.
Great, refreshing ideas. Coconut Grove could benefit from such a movement.
Green Party would be more successful than other parties in the Grove.
This seems like a bit of an overreaction to standard campaign rhetoric. What would make more sense than fretting over stray language in campaign marketing materials would be to examine the candidates' platforms. But that takes more work.
I get that people want fresh ideas and to try something different, but libertarians are idealistic nutjobs. No clue how to be practical. Not to worry though, I'm sure their $1,000 won't go very far . . .
@Grovite. way to prejudicially demonize and belittle an entire group of people you seemingly know nothing about. Help us out here, does their idealism make them nutjobs or are they all crazy to begin with and then coincidentally idealist? Do you consider a requirement for a governing body to not spend more than it has an impractical request? You seem to think that $1000 for a village council campaign means their cause is pointless. Would you only vote for a campaign that burns tens of thousands to get a seat on a village council? Why would you be suspicious of someone who is not willing to spend massive money to be elected to "serve the community"? Why would someone buying a position that should net them no meaningfull financial gain no be more suspicious than a campaign unwilling to burn other people's money in order to be elected to a position where they may replicate the non burning of othe's money at a larger scale?
FYI, at a recent Democratic Club meeting, the Democrats said they'd use a very dubious strategy. That strategy being to vote only for Democrats, regardless of ideas and platforms.
My opinion is simple. If you're looking purely at party lines, then the Democrats seem to be the worst option for Coconut Grove. Did you know that the Chair of the Democratic Party of Florida is none other than the CEO of Terra Nova? You know, that huge development company that's building all these high-rises across the Grove... Why do you think Grove Dems are the only Democrats not speaking out on development?
I saw the platform of these Libertarian candidates... And to be honest, they're the only ones with an actual platform. It's clear that they've studied the issues in Coconut Grove, that they have solid backgrounds, and that they have an actual big picture of what the Village Council should no.
Point to me a single other candidate that has a platform, and then we can criticize.
And I agree with Spamtasticus. The amount of money raised doesn't reflect my choices on who I'd like to vote for.
