Did Mayfair Hotel gouge people after Irma?

Did the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove try to gouge people after Hurricane Irma struck? Channel 10 has an interesting report about a resident trying to get a room at the Mayfair hotel after going seven days without power. Luis Cano and his family booked a room using Expedia, but when they tried to check in, the clerk at Mayfair's front desk asked for more money. The hotel would not honor the Expedia price and the clerk said that they could get more money for the room than the Expedia price.

I heard complaints about the gouging at the time, but didn't react to it because I felt the hotel would just deny it. Which they did.

Not sure what the answer is. The Mayfair says it was a mistake.

Plenty of rooms were available at the time. Jim Mauer, hotel manager says that the rate never changed pre-storm, during the storm, post-storm.

Here is the story and news video report at Local 10.

I was there and yes they were charging different rates. And, the rate dropped following the storm. I was charged $179/ night. The line to the right of me was being charged $141 / night. when I asked why, they came up with varying stories. I was standing right there so I could hear what the other booking agent was saying. My friend walked into the lobby this past Friday night and got a room for $129 / night. Obviously, the rates did vary for whatever reason.

What is a shame is that this was their opportunity to support the local community and instead they raised their rates. It's too bad that they took advantage of the situation instead of lending a hand in a time of need.

I don't know any of the details here, but $179 a night? Come on people... why do we all get so offended at everything? That's a pretty good price in Miami...

We should be grateful that hotels are willing to stick it out during a storm and still provide rooms... and if they do, they deserve to be paid more?

They should offer hourly rates like NoTells on 8th Street to raise revenues.

Count me among those who think that anti-price gouging laws are probably counterproductive, as they create a disincentive to get goods and services to places where they are most needed in a crisis. Regardless, $179 a night isn't bad at all for that property. In fact, it's better than the rate we got for riding out Irma at the Four Points Sheraton on Bird Road. But people in the Grove seem to always find something to complain about.

The brand new SLS on Brickell was only charging $99 for locals without power. And they let you bring your pets. They were beyond gracious.
