Who is going to pay for all these bike projects?

On Wednesday, August 30 there is a meeting at City Hall which is an information gathering session on possible transportation projects. New projects could be funded through new development projects.  The meeting starts at 6:30 pm, City Hall is at 3500 Pan American Drive.

There are proposals for tryouts for crosswalks and bike lanes in the Center Grove.

These crosswalks and bike lanes may be funded by those who use them. I don't know how that would work, but it reminds me of this new issue proposed for Key Biscayne. There is a proposal to double the toll fees to pay for a new bike lane/track and to fund the Bear Cut Bridge. Ironically, the cyclists don't pay a toll to take their bicycles across the bridges but motorists do, so that sort of has the motorists footing the bill for the bicyclists. As for the Bear Cut Bridge, I assume residents use it more than visitors and residents don't pay much in the way of tolls, so again, visitors are footing the bill. Residents currently pay a set fee of $24 per year and the toll for visitors is scheduled to raise to $2.25 on October 1, 2017. I think I remember when it was 50 cents, was it ever that low?

When the bridge to Grove Isle needs repairs, that falls on the residents of Grove Isle. Visitors don't have to pay for its upkeep and repairs.

The doubling of the tolls to Key Biscayne will deter visitors from visiting the beaches, so that may not work, I have friends who won't pay the toll now as it is, so I am thinking that many will just not go to the beaches if tolls are doubled. Key Biscayne residents will love that - less people on the island.
