Grove's Cheesecake Factory is closing

According to the South Florida Business Journal, the Cheesecake Factory in Coconut Grove is closing. I've heard the rumor for years and every time I asked the staff, they told me it wasn't true.

Now the story is that they are closing May 28. Workers were handed out notices to that affect.

Duffy's is probably going because of the office project and I know Starbucks is moving during renovations. They are either taking the former Coldwell Banker space in the center of town or their old location where the Goose was. Starbucks was there first.

It makes more sense for that location since it's all set for a restaurant and the Coldwell Banker spot does not have a kitchen, etc.

Cheesecake Factory is the canary in the coal mine that is the grove. Has there been much info released on the redevelopment and how long it will take? Coldwell spot is a better coffee shop location (worse for panther though) for Starbucks long term; they don't even need a real kitchen.

Would be neat if we had a section of this site which tracked all the goings on of each important topic in the area (like what's going on with the marina redevelopment?? There are condos in that project now?)

The engine for real growth (not alterantive growth) in Coconunt Grove has been and is moms and pops and small businesses. Chains and cookie cutter businesses have failed and will fail here. Think Chili's, Miami Subs, Hooter's, Haagen Dazs, Johnny Rocket's, Hungry Howie's Pizza...........

C'mon, folks, be honest. I feel sorry for the people who are getting laid off, but the food at The Cheesecake Factory airport-quality, at best. To mourn its passing as if it was some great cornerstone of the Grove lifestyle seems rather silly.

Agree on Cheesecake factory, and all the other chains, although they lasted the longest. The office building will bring more shoppers to the Grove so that is good for business. Half the store in that atrium were revolving doors anyway.

The Grove really needs some entertainment. There's nothing to do after you stuff yourself at a local restaurant and walk around center Grove for 15 minutes.

It's a shame that Cheesecake Factory is closing. Even though it's a chain (and you all hate those), it has been a staple here. Say what you want about it, but it always attracted business to the area.

Is Fat Tuesday closing up shop as well?

Cheesecake Factory has been my husbands and my Cheers for over 20 yesrs. We have made great friends their and enjoyed several celebrations. Chain restaurants as u call them are what you make of them. Most of the staff have been there for years. We have had weddings births deaths etc.shared with most of them. Most of the local pubs and restaurants hire seasonal staff and usually last a season. We are sorry to see it close and to see f
Our friends leave

Keep in mind the chains drew more people per day than the small mom n pops, so there is value to them.
I do wish we had more entertainment options too.
The businesses/offices will bring a ton of day time traffic which will help the restaurants and bars survive and offer evening fare.

The historic Playhouse should be reopened ASAP. More office buildings will take away from the fishing village atmosphere. How about some creative architecture to adapt new offices to Grove's history and remaining landscape? Not monolithic boring glass and concrete citadels.

It kool to rebuild but i don't like that they couldn't reach an agreement with my fav spot DUFFYZ to put them some where in the plans. The same goes for Fat Tuesday. The new owners needs to rethink their plans to add in Duffyz, Fat Tuesday & the movie theater. If anything...DUFFYS for sure...RT!!!!
