A World of Orchids at Fairchild's Orchid Festival
Vanilla Orchid |
The 15th anniversary of the Orchid Festival will be highlighting the Million Orchid Project, an effort to grow one million native and endangered orchids. An exciting new addition to the project is the Fairchild STEMLab, a mobile tissue culture lab in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. University of Miami School of Architecture’s Design/Build students constructed the lab inside of a decommissioned school bus and it will be on view throughout the festival at Cycad Circle. It has been travelling school to school giving students the opportunity to propagate their own orchids and joining in on the environmental restoration effort since September 2016. In addition, horticulturists and orchid specialists will present gardening demonstrations to show the best methods for growing and caring for orchids, and the OrKids tent for children will have interactive activities demonstrating plant-animal interactions.
After browsing through the orchid exhibit, stroll through Fairchild’s 83 acres and discover exhibits like the Palmetum, Vine Pergola, and Wings of the Tropics indoor exotic butterfly conservatory. Be sure to visit the Adam R. Rose and Peter R. McQuillan Arts Center to view “Landscape Photography” a series landscape photography artworks from around the world, on loan by the Martin Z. Margulies Collection.
The Glasshouse Café and Lakeside Café will be closed but there will be plenty of food options available during the festival. Tea and sweet and savory snacks will be served at the Orchid Tea Garden in the Baobab Courtyard, local vendors and food trucks will serve their favorite dishes
Admission is $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up, $12 for children 6-17, and free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road.
