They're resisting Trump as president
They call themselves "Progressive Miami" and this was their third meeting. District Commissioner, Ken Russell was the keynote speaker. Here he is shown, addressing the group. The group's spokesman, Glenn Terry, said. "Most voters did not choose Trump to lead the country, we are a small part of that group. We plan to be a thorn in his side for the next four years."
Already the group has organized e-mail campaigns and congressional office visits. This Saturday half of them will be at the Women's March on Washington in our nation's capitol.
The others will be attending the "sister march" here in Bayfront Park downtown, called the "South Florida Women's Rally." Both events are free and open to the public. Their Facebook pages can give you needed information.
For more details on the Grove-based Progressive Miami group, contact Glenn Terry at bettermiami1@yahoo.com. Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 31, 6 pm at St. Stephens Church (2750 McFarlane Road).

Interesting how the entitled white folks who live mostly in the Center and South Grove now want to be thorn in Donald Trump's side for the next four years, but didn't care all that much about how their local government spent their money, abused power or generally treated them like s**t over the last 7 years.
It really tickles me how all of these righteous, chest beating folks also allowed the Mango Strut to become a parody of a parody parade by refusing to do any parodies of Sarnoff, Tomas Regalado, or on any of the antics that went on inside of Miami City Hall over the last 7 years.
Yet, these whiners now claim they're going to be a thorn in Donald Trump's side, and right out in front is Commissioner "Selfie Boy" Russell.
This is the reason that this country is now in for some really hard times, because a bunch of whiny, self-entitled morons with cows**t for brains have all of a sudden decided that trying to take on a President in Washington DC is a lot more doable than trying to protect themselves from a rapacious, corrupt local government with a gangster Mayor, a lying corrupt Police Chief, and a bunch of City Commissioners who've been selling out to developers for years and in the process have created a city with huge income inequality, horrendous traffic problems, an economy tied to tourism and real estate speculators, and a city hall where "Let's Make A Deal," should be the city's motto.
Al Crespo
I'm so old, I remember when opposing the President's agenda was racist and obstructionist!
I have lost all respect for Ken Russell. Really? When Ms. Sarnoff did the classy thing and stepped down so you could take office, you have no respect for the system and are opposing Mr. Trump's election. You don't have to like Trump but you are a government representative and should respect the process.
Ironic that a person who was elected with no experience, seldom voted, never participated in any effort to benefit our community other than champion a toxic park near his house, but was able to rally votes from citizens that also seldom voted, is unhappy with a guy elected for Pres who also is not qualified for the office!
Crespo, whiny, seriously? Very articulate argument... And Ken Russell, love him, genuine, caring, take action person. What have you done lately except whine? Thanks GG for sharing CG news.
I am regretting having voted for Ken Russell. He should concentrate on the issues in his district which is what he was elected to do instead of challenging an incoming president.
He of all people should set an example and respect our democratic system. Being divisive and protesting the inevitable is a waste of time and is not good for this country.
Well said!
You self are "old angry white men", who only can whine on this platform and behind closed doors. Exactly the same way as all the other angry White men, who voted for Trump. "So, only because Ken is a Commissioner he is not allowed to have his own political views in the public? But Trump and all of his business partners, soon to run the country, can? Get real! Did you camp with the homeless people in the Grove, or was it Ken? Did you fight in the public for the proper clean up of our park? NO, you sit there and only criticize whatever comes along. Time for a generation change! Whatever happens in Washington DC from now on will backfire even to Coconut Grove, to our school and health systems. Being with people, who oppose Trumpism is the only right thing to do and not HIDING behind this platform.
I thought I liked Russell as well. I won't judge him solely on this but it's amazing how much the libs can't accept the election results of this fair democratic process and say things like "most voters did not choose Trump". Guess what, the electoral college is part of our democratic process, and it's in place to protect the rest of the "fly over" country from being over voted by the citizens who live in NY and California.
And thanks Swlip for your comment. I'm assuming these are the same types of folks who will be attending the speech of the drug dealer at CGSC.
Next week every adult is to report to their local community center to register for mandatory Russian night classes.
Thank you Anonymous 12:52 PM
Ken Russell you would be well served to remember that you were not elected by a majority either. You were only fortunate enough to be elected due to the withdrawal of Theresa Sarnoff.
Should you wish to retain your post, suggest you try to represent all your constituents. Just because we don't protest, whine and complain about the electoral process when it doesn't go our way, doesn't mean that we don't approve of the election results.
Thanks, Tom, for covering this, and thanks to Glenn, Robin, Commissioner Russell, Mayor Stoddard, and all the others who are helping to make this happen.
I think everyone has the right to express their thoughts however, meetings like this are counter productive to our country and helping our new President help us move forward as one nation under God! It is time for all of us to come together and unite. The past eight years has brought nothing but disunity, in my opinion and division.
Al nailed it. If all these people had more devotion to local politics, the city and the Grove, would be in better shape.
Good thing Crespo is available to advise us on how to improve ourselves. You would think with such wisdom and popularity he could be elected to lead us to become better individuals and a more successful community. But I suspect his true expertise is in banks and penal institutions.
to 10:33 am - there is no magic sky man, and if there were, it would have stricken Drumpf down long ago. That person, Drumpf, if he deserves to be called even that, is a megalomaniacal demagogue dead set on opposing anything that does not lead directly to his material gain.
He literally said, "I could shoot someone down in the street, and [my supporters] would still vote for me" Do you all realize that he insulted your stupidity to your faces?
