Bring your sense of adventure for the island clean-up

There is a Coconut Grove Island Clean-up event on Saturday, August 6, from 9 am to 4 pm. The group departs from Shake-A-Leg at 9 am, where you can also register. Shake-A-Leg is located at 2620 S. Bayshore Drive.

You'll be transported to one of three islands to clean-up garbage on and around the island, then you'll transport the garbage back to shore and deposit it in dumpsters. Then, the fun part starts with a BBQ at Grove Bay Grill with live music and burgers, hot dogs and draft beer.

TIME LINE
9 – 9:30 am - Registration, 
9:30 – 9:45 am -  Welcome and Review of safety guidelines
9:45 – 10:30 am - Load boats and transport to islands
10:30 am – 1:30 pm - Island clean up
1:30 – 2 pm - Return and dispose of garbage
2:15 – 4 pm - BBQ, Drinks & Music.

To participate please register through Cynthia Harshaw at Cynthia@grovebaygroup.com or by calling 305-285-1366. A minimum donation of $15 is required (All proceeds to go to Shake A Leg Miami). All participants will need to fill out a waiver prior to event or on the morning of.

This is a rain or shine event, they will continue as scheduled unless there is lightning or thunder. In the event of inclement weather, participants will participate in games and activities hosted by Shake-A-Leg.

It is recommended that you wear either water shoes or comfortable sneakers that you do not mind getting wet. Be sure to wear sunblock. Mosquito spray may not be needed as the islands are regularly treated, however come prepared with spray if you feel you need it.

Latex gloves will be provided however it is recommended that you bring thicker gloves if you own a pair. Children 7 years and older are welcome to participate if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Water Stations will be stationed on all boats as well as on all the islands however you are welcome to bring your own water or sports drinks if preferred. Other items you may want to bring: Hat, Sunglasses, Change of clothes, Towel, Change of shoes,  A Smile, Sense of adventure and Desire to improve our community.

I have spent many a happy day cleaning up these islands, despite the heat, mosquitoes, and threat of rain, and I'm glad to see that Shake-a-Leg is now continuing the project. In fact, I initiated this work with them. However, the idea that volunteers should have to pay to do this does not sit well with me.
