Is it all about tv time?

I read in Daniel Richter's newsletter, the Watchdog Report, that an important way to reach Brickell residents is through tv ads, this is what the District 2 candidates need to do in order to penetrate the secure condo buildings, as candidates cannot go door-to-door on Brickell like they do in other neighborhoods.

This is why having a large war chest is important, tv advertising costs a lot, but luckily local tv and cable tv are not as expensive as national ads or other cities; for instance advertising on New York City tv stations would be quite expensive, in Miami, it's manageable. Hopefully the candidates all realize this.

Paid content in blogs is another good idea (I'm not hinting at anything here, but we do receive more readers at times than the Herald's neighbors and some tv stations and so do most other local blogs, I sometimes think it's the Howard Stern Effect; readers want to see what we are going to say next, so they keep coming back). I think it's important that the candidates reach out more than just at forums. Most people have not heard of most of the candidates and most people don't attend forums.

This of course would have been a good reason to have the Village Council meetings back on tv, as they did before the Sarnoff regime took over eight years ago and threw them out. Back then, all meetings were broadcast and you could watch them live, DVR them or watch them rerun during the week, also they were archived on the City's website. Candidate forums at those meetings would be free tv time for all candidates, a great city service.

In eight years, the City's line (lie?) perpetuated about wanting to "share the dais with neighborhood groups," never happened. I don't know of any neighborhood groups or condos who want their business broadcast to everyone. And the Village Council was thrown out to allow room for others, which never happened.

A great city service would be a debate or forum for commission candidates that is broadcast and rerun for all residents to see. For now, we have Al Crespo's videos of the recent forums. You can see them archived at his YouTube channel here: www.youtube.com/user/alcrespo11.
