Is it too late to get a charter change (I think that is what is needed) in place for the next election.
We need to rethink our commission districts.
Let’s add two more commissioners giving us this breakdown:
· One for New Miami, Brickell City, (S. of River to U1, W.- I-95 to Bay)
· One for the Grove (U1 south to Gables, W.- Lejeune to Bay)
· One for Midtown, (N. of River to 36 street ( might include the Design district) W.- Bay to - I-95 ?
These are only suggestions, but you get the point.
Each of these districts has its own goals and objectives and it is difficult to believe that one representative could represent all of them. This would give those districts representation that that represents them and hold elected officials responsible to the residents of those neighborhoods.
This would also require that the commission vacate City Hall, give it back to the residents as a historic destination because it is too small, and move to the MRC building on second Ave. where they belong.

Interesting proposal, but all you would do is create enclaves with their own specific goals and interests. There would be no way to unify the city around a common economic, transportation, or public service plan. It would actually create more of an incentive for the county to do this, and I don't think you want that. Moreover, since the Grove has such a unique political/culture outlook, it would further isolate us and we would just get outvoted.
I think what you want is incorporation, but that ship has sailed.
It's time to go back to city-wide elections with candidates having to LIVE in specific districts for several years before qualifying to run.
And TWO year terms to keep them close to the electorate.
Eliminates the IMPERIAL COMMISSIONER - a la Sarnoff - who thinks they are KING of their enclave.
They all tend to forget that they are CITY Commissioners and NOT DISTRICT Commissioners.
They only reason to have them be residents of a particular district is to ensure that there are Commissioners who are familiar with all the neighborhoods.
We made this change back when most of the Commissioners lived near each other in Coconut Grove and it was difficult for Black and Hispanic candidates to get elected..
Can someone, hopefully an attorney, explain why the incorporation ship has sailed?
If you can't get Grovites to agree on when a rotting oak tree needs to be cut down, how the hell are you going to get them to agree on taxes, services, and all the big issues that go into incorporation.
No legal fine print there my friend.
