Speaking of trees . . .

There's a Great American Trees contest going on and one of our trees in Coconut Grove is in the running. I didn't realize it myself until it was pointed out, but the county was gracious enough to move the ficus tree near the new peanut on Tigertail and 27th Avenue just a few feet, to protect it, and it made all the difference. The old tree was in the direct line of the new traffic lanes but now is inside the peanut. The tree was saved, it's perfect there and it shows how Tree Watch and the county can work together to get things done.

Lilliana Dones and Santiago Vegas Villegas of Coconut Grove Tree Watch nominated the tree, now they need your vote here at the website. July 30 is the final day to vote for this Great American Tree.

It's great that they relocated and saved this native "strangler fig" but a far more exceptional tree in the Grove that is vulnerable and needs to be protected is the mahogany tree on north side of S. Bayshore Drive/S Miami Ave, just past Viscaya as you head towards the Brickell area. It is on the corner of SW 30th Road and S Miami Av. The tree is a spectacular specimen that needs to be preserved and protected from vehicular damage and harm.
