Local businesses help make a community unique and desirable. People don’t travel to a destination to find another GAP, Starbucks, McDonalds or Walmart.
Cape Cod, Martha Vineyard and Carmel offer unique local restaurants and shops. They have zoning and smart property owners that respect and preserve local business and keep out many chain stores. But some places like Coconut Grove and Lincoln Road end up destroying their own uniqueness by raising rents so high that only chain stores can afford to establish there, if only for the high visibility. Jimmy Johns Subs is a chain store that recently opened on Main and a second location on SW 27 Ave across form Shell Lumber. Their claim to fame is that they make fast sandwiches. Wouldn’t you rather a local make you a good and affordable sandwich? The Grove now has two Starbucks on Bayshore next to Monty’s and on Grand in Cocowalk. Lincoln Road has four Starbucks. How many are enough? Have you seen the crowds going to the new Panther Coffee shop on Main? It may be a chain but at least it’s a local chain.

If a chain store can afford a certain rent, then a local business can as well. Chain stores are not in the business of losing money. And why do property owners have to "subsidize" local businesses by offering a rent lower than they can get from a "chain" store? I agree that we should all support local/small business. Its not rent that crushes them its the bureaucracy and legislation that puts a burden on small business owners. They dont have the infrastructure/time to manage all of the filings, health insurance, benefits etc.

I'm all for supporting local businesses, but let's not forget that the employees of Grove businesses--chain or local--depend on them for their livelihoods.

Let's see "Local Businesses" and "3 Million more into our Economy".

What "local businesses, exactly, where? and "Coconut Grove's Economy"? Oh, that State, or County, or City, managed by friendly, honorable and just Local Grove Officials with a smile..

Some people don't even have a clue where taxes go or who decides where to spend them. If they only had a vague idea of proportions and percentages between what District 2 pays and what ends up being allocated back to D2 compared to other regions, or other Florida State disparities.. Utterly ridiculous.

The sign should simply say "Please, stay in school. Enjoy your meal. Thanks"

If you run a good business and provide a quality product at a fair price you will survive. All others should not survive.
