Do dog owners get a free pass?

Why are dog owners so exceptional that they get a free pass to walk their pets in public, and are tolerated to urinate and defecate on our lawns, streets and parks? Why are they allowed to enter restaurants and shops even when it is again the health code, unsanitary and dangerous to those people that have allergies? Why do we tolerate Comfort Pets and Service Animals, especially many that are truly neither? Are Dogs special like those illegal refugees that have been be granted Wet Foot Dry Foot exemptions. Is it not discriminating against other pets, like cats, birds, rabbits, pythons, iguanas, hamsters, ferrets and gerbils.

Feel free to send in Coconut Grove observations (good or bad) and we will run it as a "Postcard From a Friend." Any observation, long or short, if it's not good, please try not to use names of people or places. Email address is to the right, you can email your "postcard" there. We'll keep it anonymous.

I love dogs, but if people walk their dogs in public they should pick up after them.

How are they "illegal refugees" ? And how do you compare them to dogs and pets? Must be nice to live in in a little world, or should I say "village", of you and a few others own making where you get to complain about the most trivial topics and wonder why things aren't the way they used to be. A "village" that really isn't a village or any other legally recognized municipal entity beyond just being just another neighborhood that happens to have a few affluent residents and some aging complaining former hippies.

Many dog owners should be required to receive training in dog ownership etiquette.

Amen! This post is such a joke in so many ways, I don't know where to start. Grape, you should be ashamed of yourself for putting this garbage on your blog. You seem to be getting more petty and whiny by the day. You can count on one less reader.

Love the dialogue. Good job, Tom. Would like a really good simple affordable macrobiotic organic restaurant, a print studio/gallery and a kite shop....wheeee. And allow street art vendors. To "clean up" or develop the Grove does not mean to sterilize it. Art is a powerful and inexpensive draw.

I don't think some of the comments make much sense and neither does the postcard. Too many subjects to address. Not really earth shattering. But what do I know? I'm just an aging complaining former hippie who owns dogs and always pick up after them I also have birds, but they stay home.

Hey dogs have it better here than most human, dogs have their own parks and can relieve themselves in public. can other mammalians (including humans) do that and get away with it?

Seriously? You are complaining that dogs are allowed to be walked in public? My dog won't use the restroom in my yard and I believe in allowing them exercise, so yes, I walk my dogs and clean up after them. And you are correct they have parks, so do the people of this Village.

And the restaurants that allow dogs comply with the laws. Most are only allowed on patios where the owner's pay a $1,000+ a year to have the right to allow their patrons to bring their furry friends. If you don't like animals, may I suggest moving to a less dog friendly city?

Guessing by this post, I am guessing you are a lonely, mean, unhappy soul so instead of wish you any ill will, I hope you learn happiness and patience. I hope you one day can experience the love of an animal companion and maybe you will better understand the pure bliss and elation they can provide.

The traffic circle on Tigertail and SW 27 Ave is about to be paved. I Bet soon after completion the “Entitled” dog owners will take it over as their personal Dog Park for posturing, pooping and peeing.

OK let's assume you are a dog owner who actually picks up your dog's poop. How do you clean your dog's urine from sidewalks, your neighbors yards and storefronts?

I don't clean up urine. I do, however, pressure walk my own sidewalks. I also hear rain produces water and water cleans things. Go figure.

I saw that! Well part of it.. Still can't believe that almost 10 years later, one day, a part of the remodeling on 27th av. might be finished!!. Tougher to do, or so it seems, than giving birth or any Greek Mythology accomplishment, including mighty Sisyphus !!

There should be another fireworks celebration just for that. Gentile Dogs allowed, of course.

funny article and has some truth to it. I own a dog and walk it around just like everyone else but i always pick up after him. Of course, that isn't the case with many dog owners despite free doggy bag stations existing almost everywhere these days. Dogs and dog owners can be very irritating. Unfortunately, the quality of the dog owner is typically mirrored by the dog itself, and, in Miami, that quality is pretty low if you look at the general population...
