Wasting taxpayer money. Again

Looks like the city is removing those ugly sidewalk extensions that were in the middle of Commodore Plaza (see the photo at left). Do they just do this on purpose? You know, do an expensive job and then pay lots of money to undo the job?

Who is responsible for this waste of taxpayer money? Same people that are still working and reworking on SW 27 Avenue I'm assuming.

I keep picturing that big bully of a woman who conducted the meetings regarding the street scape, she and her staff were know-it-alls about everything from which flowering trees to put in to what type of bricks; yet they let this nonsense happen?

At least we gained some parking spaces back. I would suggest those underused CitiBike racks in front of the The Grove Spot go away, too, and the parking spaces be returned to the citizens. When the residents on Brickell demanded that the bike racks be moved, they were moved. We need these moved to another area, out of much needed parking spaces.

I would suggest we really take a look at future projects like Main Highway coming up and South Bayshore Drive. Are these jobs needed? Obviously this mess on Commodore Plaza wasn't and neither is half the work being done on 27th Avenue.

Please let's remember all this waste of time, money and nonsense at election time. Most of it is just being done to put in the infrastructure to allow for massive high rises up and down the main streets.

Unbelievable. I mean I'm glad they are removing them since people were just using them to double park and block traffic, but not one person thought of this before them put them in.

Hey Grapevine, great reporting and great work!!

Your post and numerous comments from your article made people aware and eventually led to the change.

Although, its going to cost taxpayer money to make the changes, the "change" we were griping about did happened.

I'm a Center Grove resident and I'm happy this is being corrected:-)

Wonder what was spent to install them and then remove them? It boggles the mind that they were designed in the first place. For what purpose? I shudder to think about the waste for other city projects.

You be a patron Of grove spot. While I like Olaf the bikes are greater than one parking spot. As you know a garage is close and usually pretty empty

Good news - the Grove NET office has a new, full time administrator. Her name is Madelin. I met with her on Tuesday. She is very friendly and professional.

I went in there to complain about the construction workers of the Grove At Grand Bay Condo and how they are blocking off 27 Avenue. The street should be open now from Bayshore Drive, going north.

Grovites should be able to get answers and get things done through the NET office. I think that instead of just venting on the Grapevine, everybody should become more active by contacting the NET office and the commissioner's office.

Also, the Village Council has the new "Grove 2030" project and they are looking for folks to join in and contribute.

The NET office is on Mary Street, next to the OXXO Cleaners. Just walk in. Tanya, the receptionist is very friendly, as well.

Since no one calls this what it is, I will: Theft. By your elected "public servants", of your tax dollars.

Period. And no, no one is liable, no one responsible for anything, no Grove Net office will tell you how many "contractors" were approved here or there for this or that obscure RFP, and how many "mistakes" were made, new contracts, etc..

The Commodore shameful fiasco is nothing compared to the ridiculous charade, still ongoing Circus at 27Av. It's been what a Decade, just to embellish a couple of Blocks?! Ok, Eight years for 3 blocks?!!?

Many contractors and politicians are obviously getting rich off of that, an no, the "net" won't tell you who.

Give this a try: try and find out how long it will take to fix and/or remodel just the bathrooms on Keneddy Park. They were torn down and shut about 2 months ago. If the same "contractors", RFP's, and politicians are involved, be prepared to wait about Five Years to see an embellished little bathroom re-emerge there. No to mention what's cooking at Bayshore and Bird.. complete retirement plans in the works..

South Florida has a culture of malfeasance, public mismanagement and corruption. Commodore Plaza project is a drop in the bucket. Have you seen the road construction project at 826 and 836, it has been going on for seven or eight years now and they are far from completing it. Time to clean up house.

The sidewalk extensions are going to be rebuilt all over again immediately after demolition, they are removing the slope that engineers had erroneously added. I want some of these jobs, that is $50K 75K extra income to correct an error.

The 826-836 project started in November 2009, so just over 5 years, not 7 or 8.

That strange oval thing they are trying to finish this Decade on 27th av, is.. wrong. I want to be part of the next demolition and rebuilding effort in the 2020's. When will the delectable RFP's come out?

4:26 re: 826/836 must love the official time keeping game. Actually a one mile (useless) bridge built all the way in the middle of NW 25th Street which ended incomplete for years hanging in the air by 826 was started couple of years before the November 2009 you have come up with. You would only know more if you have to work in that area.

No I just don't believe in spreading misinformation and I'm very familiar with the area. The viaduct on NW 25 St has nothing to do with the 826/836 interchange project which was started in 2009. The viaduct was only completed to the 826 because, well, they ran out of money and the rest of NW 25 St had to be widened as part of the project. Either way, comparing massive highway construction to what's going on in the Grove is apples to oranges. But I digress...

The 27th Ave Complete Overall Macro- Beautifying Project Extravaganza is much more complex and diversified than 826 and 836 combined. Be patient.

Thanks for the info, had no idea the bridge ran out of money. How could a public project run out of money, assuming it was approved by smart people? I assure you the one mile bridge was not necessary, 25th street could have been widened five lanes each direction for a fraction of the bridge cost and years of lost commuter time stuck in a jam.
