Update on St. Gaudens house

Big turnout for the St. Gaudens house hearing at City Hall. The vote was 7-0 to pursue preservation, for the home designed by Richard Kiehnel of Kihnel and Elliott in 1920. He introduced the Mediterranean style of architecture to the area.

The board will also revisit the issue and may declare the whole street as being historic, which could make sections of Coconut Grove sort of like the Art Deco District on South Beach, where a huge swath is preserved.

The developer, Eduardo Goudie and his attorney Felix Lasarte and architect Jose Puentes testified that the home wasn't historic. Puentes said the house isn't important.

Neighbors seem to be ready to fight over-development in Coconut Grove after too much has been lost over the years. So much of the house at 3529 St. Gaudens Road is original, interior as well as exterior.

Be careful what you wish for. If they declare the entire street historic that might have an effect on the resale value of a home.
