SapientNitro wins this year's Great Grove Bed Race

Another Great Grove Bed Race come and gone. It's a long day, but a lot of fun. The guys in green, SapientNitro, took first place. They beat the Grove-50, which wasn't pretty. Above, Vanilla Ice, Grand Marshal of the Bed Race, congratulates the team.

Ice was great, just as in the past when he was Grand Marshal, he's actually more than that, he stays for the whole race and emcees the whole thing - he sings, he dances, he takes tons of selfies with the audience and he does an amazing job of calling the races. They were filming his DIY-tv show during the Bed Race, so that will be cool to see when it's aired later in the season.

The weather couldn't have been nicer, people enjoyed the park before, during and after the races.
This is the ShowMyProperty.net team, pretty in pink.

And just like last year, Debt Warriors had one of the most colorful beds. And Amida Umesh Frey makes it colorful.

The results are as follows:
First Place: SapientNitro
First Place Corporate: SapientNitro
First Place - Co-Ed division: Bedwetters
First Place - Men's division: Little Smiles (the charity of the day and Vanilla Ice's team and bed)
Best Engineered bed: Jaguar Therapeudics
Best Decor: The Bomb
Funniest bed: Bedwetters
Crowd Favorite by text message votes: the Taurus

Looks like the large corporations have taken over the Bed Race as well

So no dogs allowed now, laughable little entry at shut down little tunnel with plastic shades, pay to pass and follow the proper path, like obedient sheep. Feast on greaassy, expensive hotdogs. Welcome to the Groovey new Machine.

Anon@7:37pm: Have you been to previous bed races and now to this one?

The event has been caged, literally. Not to say raped, by budget considerations and $ interests, of course. What else is new?

No more dogs allowed to roam by, no more bikes or skateboards everywhere, no more free people just walking by, in and out, from any street to peruse around the larger village and have a few laughs. It was sadly reduced to a bunch of running corporate advertising inside a new steel Cage. Beyond Pathetic. Unless, of cour$e, we like them corporate city cage$ and plastic hot dogs.

Maybe the bed races were always this stupid and the "cages" just made it all the more obvious.

I guess if there were dogs roaming around it wouldn't be that bad, right?

I bet ya if people had more consideration to clean up after their dogs and kept them under control dogs would absolutely be allowed but since I run over more dog sh&t with my stroller in Coconut Grove by all the peace love and happiness (inconsiderate) hippies maybe just maybe the event did not want my kids stepping in poop in the middle of the bed races. I have to say, it is not a place for dogs. There are bears on beds, crazy costumes, kids running around and 1000's of people. A dog could be confused by the chaos and that could cause trouble. Just my two cents although all the complainers are gonna keep complaining. That is why I moved out of the Grove and took my business to another town where it continues to grow and thrive. More great feedback from the "A"holes that live in the Grove. When everyone leaves, no longer has events on your streets and Cocowalk is a ghost town (almost already is) You will all be happy.

Anon@10:23 : good point; anon@11:29 : dogs, bikes, hippies, strollers, skaters, artists, dumb business owners and parachutists plus many more people were around for the much larger, more open bed races in the Grove for yeaaaaaars and years, no "tragedies" to report, lots of people, better event. Errr, you were saying?..

Yeah, they ruined it with GREED trying to help out that stupid charity that helps put smiles on kids that have terminal cancer and stuff like that. Screw those kids. What's the name - oh, right, Little Smiles of Florida. That damn charity - they ruined the bed race for me because I think everyone should only be thinking about my spoiled, entitled, baby boomer ass. And my dog; everyone should be concerned about MY dog. Never mind that I am a liberal and continue to unthinkingly vote Democratic lawyers into office who keep putting more and more regulation on events like the bed race, including the regulations that prohibit dogs and bicycles (due to liability suits from personal injury lawyers) from being in events like this one.

@4:51 - that was possibly the worst and most delusional straw man argument yet.

No one's hating on the charity. They are mad because a once fun event is now a joke. I went, and immediately regretted it. Nothing like what it used to be. Couldn't see anything but fences & baracades. It was possibly the worst event I've ever attended.

With all due respect to this last comment - if you were really there you would know that the whole event is wide open and more accessible than the cramped space on Grand Avenue. The stage is set up better, there is area to move around and spread out and everything can be seen. It's sour grapes from a lot of whiners on Grand Avenue and enough is enough already. We get it, you lost business because the event moved. I don't remember one business owner ever being at the Bed Race meetings in the past, you just all reaped the rewards without lifting a finger. ENOUGH!
