I didn't know where to stick this, but randomly came across it and found it interesting: the description of the grove by Frommers
"Coconut Grove An arty, hippie hangout in the psychedelic '60s, Coconut Grove once had residents who dressed in swirling tie-dyed garb. Nowadays, they prefer the uniform color schemes of the Gap. Chain stores, theme restaurants, a megaplex, and bars galore make Coconut Grove a commercial success, but this gentrification has pushed most alternative types out. Ritzier types have now resurfaced here, thanks, in part, to the antiboho Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove and the Mayfair, which is in its umpteenth resurgence as a boutique hotel."
pretty apt.
Sounds like it was written by someone with an axe to grind. I'm not sure why the writer is surprised that people aren't dressed in "swirling tie dyed garb."
They wouldn't be wearing that anymore than they would be wearing knee high knickerbockers with suspenders.
Yes, yes, a worldwide travel publication has an axe to grind with coconut grove. Wow. blinding persecution complex much?
