Park(ing) Day coming to downtown Miami

McFarlane Road turned into a Park in 2010.
Park(ing) Day is back this Friday, September 19. The Miami New Times declares that "This is Miami's second consecutive run with Park(ing) Day. Need I remind everyone that Coconut Grove took part in Park(ing) Day for a couple of years? To refresh your memory, Park(ing) Day is a day where parking spaces are turned into mini-parks for the day.

"One of the things we've been mindful of -- we don't want it to be perceived as something organized by or solely the domain of Urban Impact Lab," says Marta Viciedo of the Lab who apparently has taken ownership of the event. I guess Marta needs to be reminded that it's a world-wide thing and not the Lab's creation.

And as for the claim that Miami being up from two to 10 spots in one year, I do believe we had close to 10 spots one year.

We should bring this back to the Grove. I'm not sure why it stopped, I think it was just too big a job for just a few of us to run and I see that now they have sponsors for the event where we didn't have sponsors when we did it.

Also, Park(ing) Day is meant for urban areas where there is not much parkland and the point is to bring parkland to the city. In the Grove we have plenty of parkland and don't really need to participate in Park(ing) Day, although it was a lot of fun.

To participate in Miami's event this Friday, you can get all the info at their website here: parkingdaymiami.com.
