SPEND JULY 4th IN THE GROVE
Coconut Grove will have a full day of activities for July 4th, as it does every year. It's the old town atmosphere which makes it so special.

The day starts with the annual old-fashioned picnic at The Barnacle. This is really a great way to celebrate the 4th with lawn games and a picnic on the historic land by the bay. It goes from 11 am to 4 pm.

At 5 pm, head on over to CocoWalk for their always hilarious Hot Dog Eating Contest. It's not Coney Island, but it's the Grove's version and everyone gets a big laugh out of it as people crowd around the plaza to watch the contestants see how many hot dogs can be eaten in 10 minutes.

All the local restaurants are of course open during the day, so you can wine and dine starting at breakfast (well, maybe not the wine) and then go through lunch and/or dinner.

The Peacock Park fun starts at 6 pm. And from then until 8 pm, kids can enjoy free ice cream, courtesy of the PointeGroup. Fellowship Church will provide free balloon animals and face painting and there are other free art activities sponsored by Art Box and Art Therapy Consutling and Services.

Bring your lawn chairs and blanets for the finale of the day -- the fireworks go off over the bay at 9 pm.

I'm just glad to see so few people in the first picture are watching the fireworks through their phones.

Last year we went to the Biltmore but this year the kids have convinced us to go back to Peacock Park. I think Peacock Park is a bit more kid friendly. Maybe we'll leave a bit earlier to watch that hotdog eating contest.
