Free play reading by GableStage

A new musical based on the Academy Award winning foreign film, "The Shop on Main Street," is having a live reading by GableStage at the Biltmore.

The story takes place in the Slovak town of Sabinov in June, 1942 and revolves around the relationship between Tono Brtko, a poor Slovak carpenter, and Mrs. Lautman, a widowed Jewish shopkeeper of failing health. Tono is appointed to be the 'Aryan Administrator' of Mrs. Lautman's shop on Main Street; in essence stealing the last remaining possessions of the old widow. Yet his quiet and gentle nature doesn't allow him to be cruel to the poor widow and they slowly become friends.

The ending is shocking and controversial as Tono must decide between saving himself or saving Mrs. Lautman. There are no reserved seats and there is no admission charge for this performance.

The reading is Monday, June 9 at 7:30 pm.

GableStage is located at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave. Call 305-445-1119. http://www.gablestage.org
