Another wrinkle at the Coconut Grove Playhouse

There have been a couple of meetings about the Coconut Grove Playhouse led by the Village Council and the story seems all cut and dry, the property has historic designation since 2005 and the state has control.

Components of the site include a 300 to 600 seat theater, maybe one of each. GablesStage and FIU will co-produce productions. The big question is whether the building itself will remain or is it too decrepit to stay as-is with improvements. The solution seems to be creating a quality architectural design integrating historic preservation requirements with theater, having enough backstage room to operate and shoring up the structure.

But last week county police issued a levy on the property, which can lead to a sale on the courthouse steps. It's been discovered that a company called Strategic Properties Group is owned almost $550,000. The company is known for building mixed-use projects.

Most of the other creditors resolved their claims with the state. At present, no one knows why this was not resolved and it's scary to think a company that does mixed-use development is involved as this is the worst fear of many people; another outdoor mall or condo is not a pleasant thought for that property.

The "Save the Coconut Grove Playhouse" Facebook group is selling t-shirts and hats in order to raise money to support its cause. You can visit them here for more info.

Why weren't the Board members who left the Playhouse in massive debt indebted?

What a joke! That place hasn't been working since late 2006. The city and the county need to get their act together. I hope it does get bulldozed and changed into a mixed used property, at least the property would be something. People keep talking restoring it. Well, the time is now or never. Also, if the people of the grove want to save that place they could find the 550k to do it, thats a drop in the bucket for a city like Miami or a county like Miami Dade. I smell a rat and an inside job!

Its sad, the place hasn't been used in forever, and now the city and the county don't really deserve to restore it. At 550 that not that much money to put up. Typical Miami corruption.

This company would put apartments with a publix on the ground floor in that space in no time. That's what they do... actually, strategic doesn't do anything, they are a paper company that specializes in through-put to companies like related group.
