An ugly stretch of Grand Avenue
Rather than have the beautiful arch shaped windows as a feature, Sapient has chosen to cover them with digital screens of their own, showing the back of them to the street. Another mess. That whole stretch of Grand is a mess. People often put down the Village West side of Grand Avenue but is this any better? I actually prefer the Village West end, it's real.
This east end of Grand is what the tourists see as they enter the Grove and they get right off the buses right there, you would think that Sapient would do something a little nicer to greet our Grove guests rather than have black backs of digital screens.
As for the big digital bus bench sign, I remember years ago I did a story on the buses having ads on them. They weren't wrapped like they are now, they were just small ads on the sides, I had headlined it "Our rolling billboards." It was the early 1980s and it was something new at the time, now the whole bus is an ad so who knows where these digital signs will go. We keep asking for an entrance sign to Coconut Grove at US1 and 27th Avenue, maybe it would end up being a big digital arch with ads and a welcome sign. Maybe Sapient can come up with the concept.

I want a big Burger King there.
The "bus shelter" provides no shelter. Just a LED billboard showing ever changing bright ads. Sarnoff's responsible. More to come...
Speaking of West Grove and billboards. A big billboard featuring an ad for Acropolis is still up on Grand. How long has it been closed now?
Yes, the back of the digital screens looks terrible on the window of Sapient. They are supposed to be an interactive marketing agency. Would you trust them with your business? No good taste at all!
Who is in charge of the Grove BID? Shouldn't he be fighting to get the LED billboard removed?
I've found the best approach to creating the desired result, in this instance Van Wagner would be for someone, possible the Grape to collect signatures/written opinions herein the Grape about what kind(s) of adds to allow into the "Grove Environment" this bill board and see if "we" don't accomplish the desired result. Something we call all live with and accept.
@anonymous April 03, 2014 4:13 PM: they started covering the backs of the screens with posters. The areas with them still exposed are still under construction. They moved in before the office was 100% finished.
Again, not sure what Sarnoff has to do with it.
On Sunday evening I will be posting a major story about this electronic bus sign that includes city documents, photos, video, and an email exchange that includes Sarnoff that occurred last week. There is way more to all of these bus signs than folks are aware of, including the selective placement of these LED's and signs.
Oh yes, here we go again with another hot urgent special by Al Crespo "the selective placement of these LED's & signs". Of course the signs were placed there "selectively" Al. Are you suggesting they fell from Heaven or were placed there by the CIA or extraterrestrials' Al. Oh, it was Mr. Sarnoff again, right Al?
Oh,my! You know that it's batshit, crazy time when these anonymous trolls and trollettes start invoking extraterrestrials.
In fact, the above sign is 1 of 2 illegal "programmable signs" currently operating within the city limits of Miami, and both of them are in none other than Commissioner Sarnoff's District.
Why are they illegal, and who says so? Not any space aliens. All is revealed, including photos, videos, contracts, Ordinances and sundry other items on www.crespogram.com
The one place where these signs, or these anonymous trolls and trollettes did not fall from is heaven.
The story is now posted. Give it your best shot trolls and trollettes, and give my regards to those space aliens you seem to be in contact with.
Al, when you take all your pictures, documents, reports, whatever related to these 2 illegal signs and all other subject matter you home in on and then write about, including making comments on dozens of other blogs, when it's all said & done if you crap in one hand and then present all your investigative material to the rest of the world in the other hand, which has more value Al?
It's solely up to the discretion of the reader. The value I derive from doing what I do is living in a country where I can write what I want and believe to be true, and hope that it resonates with readers.
The one thing that separates us though is that I have the courage to sign my name to everything that I write, while you anonymous troll, lurk in the shadows like a stalker.
I have no fear of being judged because I have no fear of failure, and I have a willingness to admit when I'm wrong.
You on the other hand troll, wallow in the shit and stink that trails behind those who would attack from the darkness that provides a sanctuary for cowardly behavior.
My real value troll is that I am alive and that I'm able to wake up in the morning laughing because I know assholes like you can't.
Grapevine's right about this part of Grand Ave. ... In general, around the Grove, property owners need to do a better job maintaining their properties. ... The city can do a better job, also.
Al your new handle shall be [TIST]. And what about this blog, U know, those 2 signs? The signs are fine, block the sun after midday, and represent a symbol to Mark's enduring superiority, intellect and well intended actions.
Mr. Criso, or by your new handle [TIST] try to stay focused, this particular blog/comment involves a LED sign, hello. Pro or con the sign, the sign Mr. {TIST}. Do you have a comment about the sign?
Since they can't fix tiny eyesores like the decrepit, defunct "Coconut Grove Theater", they could at least build many more delightful red and green Zen Villages all over town, where we could go meditate and vent our aesthetic frustrations. (Dark sunglasses recommended).

Dear Troll,
Obviously you don't read, because if you did, you would know that I wrote in very clear and concise English that the sign is both illegal and a traffic distraction.
To support that claim, I included the legal opinion written by the County Attorney on what constitutes a Class B sign, and details the specifics of where they can be placed, and what they can show in the way of advertising.
I focus on the "facts" and you focus on attacking me, and since you are too much of a coward to identify yourself I'm going to take a guess that you are none other than The Beard, and this is your way of trying to butch up for the campaign.
Just the thought of "reporting" on you and your antics is enough to insure that I won't be retiring until after the election.
Come play with me darling, let's see how long you last this time.
Remember what "Crooky" did to you last time?
Dear Al, [TIST] A legal opinion defined: "A belief or conclusion held with confidence, but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof". Translated for your future edification, the sign is legal & stays put! Regurgitate up some of your vulgarity to explain why it is you can't seem to get anything right. Don't get confused between an opinion, lawful and illegal. And remember for every attorney who wins a case, another attorney has to lose putting all attorney's in a 50% loser category. You don't even come close qualifying for either category.
The Miami-Dade County Sign Code is very clear. Programable signs are illegal, except under very narrow circumstances such as a site with 10 acres or more and signs that advertise goods and services sold on site. Even City staff admit programable signs like the billboard shown in the photo are illegal. Interesting that the new billboard pictured in the story is adjacent to a bus stop bench yet there is no shelter from the sun and rain. Just a billboard stuck on a Grove sidewalk.
"Except under very narrow circumstances" & "City staff admit programmable signs like the billboard shown in the photo are illegal".
What are the other narrow circumstances & what city staff member said this?
It's vague, but I remember several articles in the Miami Herald that made similar remarks about all the signage being attached to downtown Miami buildings. Some were 3/4 stories high and some a hundred or so feet wide. The article read that both the County and Feds [DOT] found these signs illegal.
As of today the signs are still attached & more have been added.
The County has a well written Sign Code.
Because elected officials get boat loads of cash from billboard companies Code Enforcement is instructed to ignore all the illegal signs.
