On Friday, February 21, City of Miami Parks and Recreation reopened the eastern portion of Merrie Christmas Park, located at LeJeune Road and Barbarrosa Avenue, after receiving clearance through Miami-Dade County's Department of Environmental Resource Management (DERM). Testing conducted within the reopened area verified no evidence of contamination.
In an effort to restore access for the neighborhood as quickly as possible, the City of Miami Parks Department relocated the fence previously running along the perimeter of the park to a smaller contained area so that access could be restored to some of the open field area for resident use.
Remediation work for the western half of the park will begin in March and is scheduled to be completed in June 2014.
