Ransom Everglades hosts MLK Tournament

The Tournament of Champions is hosting the 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic on January 17-20, at Ransom Everglades.

This is South Florida's longest running scholastic basketball event that features 48 of Florida's top teams and players both men and women. The MLK Classic former players include the Miami Heat's Udonis Haslem and James Jones; New York Knicks' Tim Hardaway Jr., the Lakers' Steven Blake, Memphis Keyon Dooling and a host of NCAA greats. Haslem competed in the MLK Tournament in the mid '90s for Miami High.

The teams will be competing in 12 games. Many local athletes like Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, plan on attending some of the games with their kids.

Over 1100 athletes and thousands of fans, families and college recruiters will be visiting Coconut Grove for this annual cage classic. Because of the national significance of some players, both state and national media will be in attendance to cover such players as 6'10" Alonzo Mourning, Jr. of Ransom.

The final game on Saturday will be Miami High, top-ranked in Class 8A, playing Blanche Ely, No. 1 in Class 7A. It starts at 9:30 pm.

Tickets are $10. For info, please email tocsports@aol.com or call 305-281-9461.

The girls will play at the Ransom Middle School (2045 S. Bayshore Drive) and the boys at the upper school (3575 Main Highway).
