Village Council meeting canceled

Unfortunately this week's Village Council meeting is canceled as the council will not have quorum to hold a meeting.

The next meeting will be determined in November when the newly elected board is sworn in. Early voting starts today, October 21, and election day is November 5.

This is unfortunate because the people running for office were going to introduce themselves at the meeting. While a few people have emailed me to ask who I was recommending, I don't know any of them, so all I can suggest is to read their bios here.

One guy does not have a bio, I would suggest not voting for him. If he can't provide a photo and bio, I don't see him as a guy to vote for.

Seth Sklarey has been a Grove resident longer that Commodore Munro. I don't know his politics, but he sure is dedicated to the Grove.

Linda Williams is secretary of West Grove Homeowners and Tenants Assoc., and deeply involved in West Grove issues, as, I think, the Village Council should be, too.
I don't know anyone else on the ballot.

I would surmise that one of the reasons they cancelled this meeting is because I was put on the agenda.
After much prodding Jessica Lewis finally relented and added me to the agenda. I had requested "equal time" that being equal to what was given to Art Noriega and Henry Torre for their presentation supporting Grove Bay. Obviously I was planning to do a presentation opposing Grove Bay. Apparently they would rather cancel a meeting than allow concerned citizens to voice their opinions. No doubt Sarnoff has played a role here too in his efforts to suppress the voice of the people.. Charles Corda

Very little, but they do it loudly. In all reality, it's nothing more than a club.

Why does it even exist and who funds it ?

It's exhausting reading the comments on these articles which generally range from hysterics to hyper-conspiratorial accusations. I don't want this to come off as a personal attack, but enough already.

I'm a 29 year-old resident of the Grove and have attended several of the Village Council meetings. I attended the meeting where the developers first presented their plans for the waterfront. Mr. Corda was there as well, and the crowd gathered on that day was forced to listen to his accusatorial diatribe then.

I don't share his opinion, and not a single friend of mine in this community does either. If he wants to continue drumming up hysterical opposition,he should use his newly-created PAC to do so. The Village Council is not the Charles Corda council, and shouldn't be forced to continually allow one person to dominate meetings.

As for myself and everyone I know, we could care less about his hysterics and hope the Grove Bay project moves forward as planned.

Cocoanut used to be the old-timey way of spelling Coconut. I think the English language dropped the A in the 1920s but the Council wants to preserve a link with the past and continues to use the A. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.

That's my interpretation of it anyway.

If the new candidates had any sense they would turn up anyway. Yes the council may not be sitting but the room is booked, they could have a meet the candidates night. If they can't cooperate and organize that then what hope have we of them organizing a relevant and productive village council.

Ahh Charles, yes I am quite sure the Council members were quaking in their boots when they saw your name on the agenda. Or maybe they just did not want to pay for another police officer to escort one of your supporters off the premises. You really are such a progressive voice for sanity and reason in the Grove. Now run along and stand on street corners and smile at strangers or whatever you were doing the other day.

James Douglas (No relation), I agree with everything you said.

JD.

The Village Council was formed so that the people of Coconut Grove would have a voice in the overdevelopment in the Grove. Mayfair went in as a response to the wealth coming to Miami to shop. There was an upscale Burdines along with a movie theater, bookstores, hair salons, and restaurants. We got rid of a grocery store along with lots of funky shops and restaurants. Then came Cocowalk. That replaced other funky shops. Two malls with lots of empty stores. Now Mayfair is turning into offices and Cocowalk is turning into Dadeland. And lets not forget the development of Monty's along with their expensive rents and empty stores. The Village Council no longer represents the interests of the community as only developers are allowed to speak while the average joe is silenced. While you sit and listen to the promoters of this new mall, remember that it was Sarnoff himself that closed the late night clubs. He's the one that stocked the Village Council with his people. He's the one that never told us what the deal was with Home Depot, only that it was in our best interest. He's the one that wants a 50 year (yes, 50 years!!!) lease for the developers. I know that I pay lots in property tax every year and he's giving our land away like its his!

The irony of this whole thing is that someone like Steve Kneapler, a person that has been wheeling and dealing with city hall for years, may be our only hope!! God help us all.

12:28, you raise good points. But why should Commissioner Sarnoff listen to you? He doesn't have to and he continues to make that clear.

The real fact is only the Grapevine has the where-with-all to interact with the general public regarding "public" issues! I feel that Tom would gladly provide space to anyone who could put forth a real honest attempt in writing and with plans [blueprints] providing details, not rhetoric about how we Grove residents prefer to see the Grove develop.

Interesting that people would attribute things to me that I have not done. Anyone who was at the last Council Meeting can tell I did not speak one word about Grove Bay, However I did ask Ron Nelson a question about the Toxic parks issue. The fact that the community was expressing their displeasure for Sarnoff and this project had very little to do with me.
At the previous Meeting I asked perhaps one or at most two questions. The problem as I see is that people who support Sarnoff in this have no real basis in truth or fact to do so, so they personally attack those who have questioned the rationality of of this ill-conceived intensive development of our public lands. Anyone who spends more than 5 minutes looking at this inane proposal would have to come to the same conclusion that I have. VOTE NO on Election day. STOP GRIOVE BAY!

Wow!
There is one hell of a misinformation campaign being put on by the pro Grove Harbor side. Yesterday there was an unsigned opinion piece in the Herald that was full of misinformation and today on the channel 10 site there is a story titled Grove Harbor Project but there is no story attached, only an artists rendering of the proposed space with nothing but trees, picnickers and huge, open, spacious lawns.
Nice false representation of the project to the greater population who are unfamiliar with the whole issue but who will be voting on it in two weeks.
