Forget-Me-Not opening at Deering Estate

Artist Book Dona Altemus with Mia Leonin
The Forget-Me-Not exhibition is opening this Wednesday at the Deering Estate. The new show premieres nature inspired installations throughout the Richmond Cottage. Regina Jestrow, Deborah Goldman and Nellie Appleby, alumni of the artist in residence program at The Studios of Key West (TSKW) are featured.

Forget-me-nots is the common name of a genus of plants with clusters of small predominantly blue flowers that veer into pinks and whites whose genus name is Myosotis. Embedded in the name is sentimentality, a wish of a lover not to be forgotten by their sweetheart, whose sweetness matches the beauty of its flowers. The three artists in this exhibition share botanic inspirations for their artworks while veering and refining individually through storytelling, pattern, the domestic, gardening, history and a heartfelt love of the botanic and natural world.

Artists Dona Altemus, Diego Quiros, and Carrie Sieh present the culmination of their onsite Artist in Residence Projects from the Deering Estate at Cutler, as well.

Altemus presents folded paper and cloth pieces with the poetry of Literary Artist in Residence, Mia Leonin; Quiros' work, filled with compelling visual textures, shares his project The Four Elements containing unexpected images of water, wind, earth, and fire; Sieh highlights a handmade book piece made with wine and grass stain images, along with dramatically stitched large scale, emulsion-peeled photographs of embraces.

The Deering Estate at Cutler, a Miami-Dade County Park, is located at 16701 SW 72 Avenue. This 444-acre natural and archeological preserve and historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a center for education, culture and recreation.
