Blanche Park's soil found to be contaminated

The rumor has been going around all day, now it seems to be true. The meeting tonight in Blanche Park is in regard to contamination found in the soil at the playground and dog park.

Ironically, after yesterday's story about the incinerator in Village West, Old Smokey, no contamination was found in Armbrister Park or Peacock Park, which was part of a recent study.

In the 1930s, the park was a dump at 3045 Shipping Avenue.

We posted this earlier about the meeting tonight:

Meeting: Monday Sept. 9, 6:00 pm
At entrance to children's park.

I want to speak to all parents and dog owners at this meeting concerning both parks.

This is important, and I am asking you to have as many people there as you know who have an interest in Blanche Park.

Please forward this email to anyone you think would have an interest.

Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, Chair
Miami City Commission, District 2
305-250-5333

And Sarnoff's reaction to contamination in a playground is a private email? Not public notice, posting of signs, closing of the park? Where is his brain, the city attorney, or anyone with human decency in city hall?

Instead, an email goes out to friends of Sue McConnel?

In reference to the first comment, there has been a sign up at both parks since at least the weekend. If you used either park you would have seen it. I didn't receive any email but attended the meeting because I saw the sign.

Quit the whining...this was not a secret or privliged meeting....jeez

(raises hand)
Can I "whine" about the fact that past politicians decided to build a park above a former toxic waste dump?
Can I "whine" about the park remaining open for children to play in while it's determined whether its.... scratch that. that the City will keep the park open while saying DERM said a layer of astroturf will be sufficient protection?
Can I "whine" about even more tax dollars being spent on Sarnoff's personal park while Peacock is slowly parceled off to St Stevens private school and church?

Yeah. I guess I should just STFU and accept without question or complaint while my taxes are used to fix yet another problem created by one polititian ( the one who signed off on a park being built over a dump with toxic waste) and another, while addressing the issue, is trying to keep the issue as low profile as possible.

The park should be closed until someone with the credentials and accountability to be trusted signs off on absolute safety of the park for human and canine use. But that's not going to happen because it would be a serious black eye to Sarnoff.

I wonder if, in another fifty years or so, people playing in the fields on Viginia Key will be wondering about the toxic waste dump that lays an inch or two below their feet.

Why does everyone talk about the dog park like it's just for Sarnoff? I've been going to Blanche with my dogs for over 3 years and I've seen him there maybe 5 times the entire time! When all 3 of his dogs were alive he would walk them past the park.

AIf you don't like dogs why not move to an area less dog friendly? Sarnoff knew for one week about the issues. That's a pretty darn fast turn around for a politician if you ask me.

Has he held a meeting with residents of West Grove to discuss their issues with contaminated soil?

"Sarnoff's personal park.." <-- I have to laugh whenever I come across comments of this sort. I've been going to Blanche regularly for the past 5 years or so. Although it's certainly not unusual to see Mark and his wife out walking their dogs... never once have I seen them inside the park with or without their dogs.

Get your facts straight haters.
