I love what Glenn has to say

My friend Glenn Terry wrote a post on his blog "The Grove Guy," called "So Long Scotty's?" on Sunday and it seems to have become required reading. You can see it here.

Glenn goes on to tell how he was incredulous like most of us after seeing the waterfront plan. Glenn is a real Grovite, he started the King Mango Strut, and what Glenn feels makes me feel that I am not so crazy for my initial and continued feelings.

Glenn's initial reaction to hearing the news was, "What?  Are they crazy? It's the best damn thing in this town!"

When you think about it, Bubba Gumps and other restaurants of that genre try to emulate the real thing. We have the real thing here, you would think that some new wood, fittings and a coat of paint could keep the thing going for years. "Real Florida," or "Real Coconut Grove" is what it is. Think of Jimbo's on Virginia Key, that was one of the most popular places here around town. I think people want "real."

I didn't think of this, but Glenn says, "Many of us were away for the summer and while we were gone, the City made plans to demolish two of our bayside restaurants, Scotty's Landing and the Charthouse."

That sounds about right for the City of Miami, wasn't Coconut Grove stolen by the City of Miami in 1925 by Miami when everyone was away?

Please read all of Glenn's piece here.

If he thinks Scotty's is the best thing in this town, he's crazier than I thought... which is saying something.

While the current project is over the top, Scotty's is absolutely a mess and has been for years. It might be the most mismanaged bar/grill I've ever heard of. Other than location, it is the worst place I have ever set foot in.

I've live right across the street from Scotty's for many years, and keep visiting the place just to see some water at night, have a beer, and listen to some live music on weekends.

Some things are cool: simple, unpretentious.. others not so much,, it's true that the service ain't great, the food is far from great, and they keep getting the same damn music bands playing the same songs month after month.

That place would be great with better management. That's where the problem is. I don't mind the plastic table and chairs, simple bars, etc. Just better personnel, better food (it's not especially cheap either) and more variety with live music.

What I really wouldn't want is a building, or high-scale restaurant blocking the water. At least at Scottys it's easy to get to the water.

But that place is usually packed. Imagine the money they could make with better management and better food.

I agree with Carlos. If they just cleaned up the place it would make all the difference in the world. Right now the fans and ceiling tarps have a ton of rust and dust on them.

I notice the service has been a bit better recently, but it would be nice if we had chefs that actually washed their hands when they came out of the bathroom. For that reason alone is why I never eat there anymore - I just have drinks.
