County agrees to playhouse plan; now what?

Good news regarding the Coconut Grove Playhouse, the County Commission agreed to a plan on Tuesday to revive the structure.

It's been an original plan actually, where GableStage director, Joe Adler will take over and program and maintain the theater by getting productions going of all sorts. The goal is to keep it open as many days a year as possible.

The County and Florida International University would co-lease the theater under the plan, from the state, for a nominal sum. There's an October deadline to have the Florida Cabinet approve it now.

Claims to the property still need to be cleared up, too, including the money owed the Aries Group. That has always been a sticking point, as the state does not want to give Aries what it thinks it deserves.

There's a $214,000 judgment in unpaid code violations fines from the city and another $200,000 in other fines. Commissioner Sarnoff says he will work to forgive the fines when the time comes.

Claims must be cleared up or the state can put the playhouse on up on the block for the highest bidder which of course many believe would be a developer with condos, not a restoration of the playhouse, in mind.

Local merchants are salivating at the thought of a reopened Playhouse as it is a large economic engine for businesses in Center Grove.

It would be so nice if everyone could just do their part in the process for the good of the community.
