The sound of no sound sounds great!

This is interesting. The City of South Miami is going to consider today whether gas-powered leaf blowers should be allowed to be used within 50 feet of any residence or commercial outdoor dining area, which sort of means, they could be used near office buildings or places like that only.

I wrote about this a few years back and got jumped all over. People wanted to know how the gardeners and maintenance workers would get their work done without leaf blowers. My response was, "Use a rake, old school style." Maybe with an old fashioned rake, the gardeners would actually pick up the leaves and debris and put them in bags rather than just blow them into the street like most do now. In most cases the crews using the leaf blowers really just move around the leaves, they don't really remove them.

South Miami's ordinance would also include lawn mowers and other loud machinery.

I understand and agree about the leaf blowers. I caught a neighbor's gardener blowing leaves into my yard more than once. The thing I don't agree with is lawn mowers. Hand mowers arent easy with our kind of grass. That's why we choose not to have any grass at all.

Suits me! Given that gardeners work the weekends too in Coconut Grove, I consider the leafblowers to be a noisy pain in the behind. Light the BBQ for an outdoor lunch and it seems to be guaranteed that someone will fire up a leafblower or petrol driven pressure washer in the near vicinity.

No worries, the lawn companies will do away with the blowers, and charge you by the hour for their laborer to rake the leaves up, or LOL, out into the street...

I won't argue abot the lazy ones who just blow them into the street or next door, I hate that to..

To all geniuses in Coconut Grove: design quiet leaf blowers, lawn mowers and other noisy devices, it can become a billion dollar business, you never know.

BELOW IS MY SOLUTION

PLAN TO REDUCE NOISE (& INCREASE PROPERTY VALUE) : my plan was based on the following observations people cut their lawns at different times usually. what if they were to cut their grass roughly simultaneously would that not be a lot quieter?
Right now the village allows residents 91/ hours/week to cut their grass ( from 8AM-9PM). therefore i propose that all lawn machine activity be it personal or commercial take 30 hours instead. Lets say from 9-1PM in the morning and 6-7PM at night except for no mowing on sunday. Thus not counting sunday you will have 5 hours/day to mow. According to the real estate industry quiet neighborhoods have a 10-12% higher property value than noisy ones.
1) so . . ."noise is not a problem here" i suggest you compare winter noise with that in summer. now in the summertime walk the area at 5AM and compare it with noise during the working day. further listen to the leaf blowers in the fall. even if the noise doesn't bother you it might others whom i have heard say so and they may have rights to quiet.
2) so . . ."30 hours is not enough time" why not consider each hour as one chance to cut your grass yielding 30 chances/week/person (or 60 chances for 2 people). if this is not enough time the hours can always be increased . further, if you can't get it done in a given week do it in the next.
more details: what is the neighborhood you propose to affect? that would be all residences on the west side of Berkeley and both sides of Santa Monica between Hampton and Chateau. what about the adjacent neighborhoods? depending on your response i would be happy to leaflet them.) what about noisy commercial services? let them know the proper times and see how they respond ($'s talk) then maybe get a competitor if they don't.
in conclusion: if you follow this schedule you will have 61 hours of relatively less noise and up to a 10-12% higher house value. but first you have to TRY this schedule to see if it is convenient. you may contact me if you decide to do this or have my suggestions at 906- 4297 i am sincerely, Tom Sherman-4856 N Santa Monica -Milwaukee 53217

addendum: minor advantages are one can plan a party with no worry about noise or know when to leave the village say to shop to avoid same. one can plan ones life better. Second people will try to use reel mowers & handsaws in the quiet hours reducing pollution. enforcement is simple all one needs is a watch and a witness but unlike speeding this could be a law that you won't have to enforce if people like it. consider the planning commission which has to enforce the esthetics's of new structures one house at a time with a 6 member panel.
