On the waterfront

This report is from the Minutes from last month's Waterfront Implementation Committee:

The Waterfront Implementation committee asked the City administration to demolish the Chart House as part of the new Scotty's Landing / Grove Harbour Marina / Chart House RFP, so that the new facility would have a wider baywalk and views of the waterfront. The request was denied. But the issue may be revisited if a new building ends up replacing the old building.

The Kennedy Park floating dock project might be modified with pilings recessed into the docks. There is some concern if this will inhibit walking and moving materials to vessels tied to the docks. The City's Capital Improvements's Program (CIP) will review this. The City Commission has already approved the contractor to stabilize the area, work should begin soon.

There are small spoil islands off the coast of Coconut Grove. The Spoil Island E floating dock construction is being held up until a City mitigation payment is made. And shoreline stabilization on Spoil Islands B and C is to begin this month. The County overseeing the project asked that the Tiki shelter site be temporarily used as a staging area for the project. Since the Tiki contractor has been unresponsive, CIP and Procurement will ask for new bids for the Tiki projects.

Grove Harbour Marina is asking for a 30 to 60 day extension of the temporary channel. The dredging of the Seaplane Channel is a project to benefit the marinas and private yacht clubs in the area. Grove Harbour Marina stated that they would be interested in helping fund this dredging, and Monty’s might be also be interested in helping with funding. Federal funding may also be availble.

The next Watefront Implementation Committee Meeting is Wednesday, February 13, from 5:30 PM-7:30 pm in the City Hall Staff Room (3500 Pan American Drive).
