The Grove needs to woo the New Theatre group
According to The Miami Herald, the New Theatre is losing it's home in Coral Gables. They need to be out of their Laguna Street location by mid-December because the building is going to be razed.
They have had three small locations in 25 years. Maybe Coconut Grove can be their 4th (and final?) location. Of course the Coconut Grove Playhouse cannot be their location now, but maybe one day, that would be possible. In the meantime the New Theatre's board has been looking around and according the Herald article, Coconut Grove is being considered.
I heard about the Mayfair redoing the former Oxygen space underground as a "black box theater." Maybe this is a good location. Maybe another space is available. But this is the opportunity the Grove may be looking for. It may be a perfect fit, they need a home, we need a crowd-drawing, cultural entity.
This is a case where I think our local leaders need to get off their hands and do something. The BID, the Chamber, the Village Council and even our District Commissioner would do Coconut Grove an excellent service by reaching out to the New Theatre and doing whatever they can to get them into the Grove.
