New charter school is opening this August

Mater Grove Academy, is opening a tuition-free public charter school in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Miami-Dade. The school will be located at the club at 2805 SW 32 Avenue.

Mater Grove will serve 257 students in kindergarten through 5th grade and will utilize the organization’s existing facilities that are comprised of 10 acres. The property features the two-story, 8,000-square-foot Alex Rodriguez Educational Center with seven large classrooms, which opened in 2010. The building was partially funded by Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees and an alumni of the Club. The facility also includes a new outdoor basketball court donated by Nike and The LeBron James Family Foundation partnership, multiple baseball fields, and an indoor gymnasium.

“We very much look forward to opening the school and serving the children of the Greater Miami community,” said Sheila Gonzalez, principal of Mater Grove. “As with all Mater schools, our goal is to provide a wonderful educational opportunity in a nurturing environment. We are also particularly grateful of this new partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade.

Mater Grove plans to integrate minimal upgrades to the facility, including the use of outdoor benches made of reclaimed wood, solar lighting and native landscaping. The school will also add a circular driveway within the property for the drop-off and pick-up of children, with the entrance on Southwest 31st Avenue.

The 257 students will be selected through an independently-conducted lottery process. Families will be notified of their selection to attend the school by the middle of the first week of August.

“We chose to partner with Mater Academy to provide seamless services to children,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “By offering a high-performing public charter school, the students will be able to transition to the after school program, allowing us to better cater to their needs and maximize the use of the existing space at the facilities.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, serving more than 10,000 children per year for more than 70 years, will continue its traditional educational after school programs for children ages 5-15. The program is designed to provide a safe and secure environment to enhance the academic learning experience, as well as social learning and development.

Mater Academy Schools’ strong academic track record has been recognized by the Florida Department of Education and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In 2009, Mater Academy Middle was named Breakthrough School by the National Association of Secondary School Principals – one of 10 schools recognized nationwide for dramatically improving student achievement. In 2008-2010, Mater Academy was named one of the nation’s top 500 high schools by U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of “America’s Best High Schools.”

“Mater’s strong track record will allow us to make a greater impact on the children in our community,” concluded Rodriguez-Roig. “This partnership will truly make a difference in the lives of these children.”
