Last week's drum circle was the best one yet!
One of the really enjoyable things last Saturday during the Gallery Walk was the Coconut Grove Drum Circle.
Ordinarilly, they meet under the stairs at Florentine Plaza, where not many people see them, but this time they were brought out onto Main Highway, right in front of H&H Jewels. And this made all the difference.
People came from all directions, cars and motorcycles stopped right on the street to enjoy the drumming. People came with families and banged the drums or danced or hoola-hooped.
At one point, there were probably a couple of hundred people there. As usual, some of the problems were the blocking of the sidewalk and the blocking of one lane of traffic as people stopped to enjoy. But I look at this as a good thing. Any time you can stop traffic and draw a crowd for something like this is good.
The Paper Bag Heads was a living art installation that started earlier in the evening down at the Mayfair Promenade and they ended up dancing in the center of the drum circle. It really did end up being an event.
The Drum Circle is part of every Gallery Walk, which is the first Saturday of every month and they will surely be there for the next Gallery Walk on August 6. They may not be at the same location, but you can be they will be in a very visable location, since this seems to be the answer to drawing large crowds.
