5th graders participating in Grove Junior Olympics
There is a new sporting event coming to Coconut Grove on Friday, May 27. It's the Inaugural Coconut Grove Police Junior Olympics.
Police Commander Richard Gentry is coordinating the event and check out the first place trophy! It's about the size of the Commander and certainly taller than most students!
The Grove Junior Olympics is open to 5th graders at three Coconut Grove schools -- Frances S. Tucker Elementary, Coconut Grove Elementary and George Washington Carver Elementary. In fact, leading up to the competition, the students are competing this whole month at their respective schools.
Competitions include the 50 yard dash, relay race, tug-of-war, basketball free throws and more. The first place winners from each school in each category will compete on May 27 at Esther Armbrister Park, at 4000 Grand Avenue). There should be a total of 135 students competing in all (45 from each school). The event runs from 10 am to 1 pm.
Prizes given on Olympics day will include the trophies for first, second and third place and gold, silver and bronze medals and everyone who participates will receive a ribbon.
Everyone is invited to attend the event, which should be a lot of fun. Focaccia Bistro has donated the food, Dr. Abbassi in Village West donated the awards and the new Central Beer Garden at CocoWalk donated the t-shirts.
