Free Shakespeare is back in an unlikely place

Shakespeare in the Park is back as it is every January, but unfortunately, the City is too broke these days to support the arts, so it will not be in Peacock Park as in previous years. The Barnacle offered up their backyard lawn last year, with the production of Taming of the Shrew (here are some scenes from last year), but it was moved again this year to a very unlikely place -- Shell Lumber!

Andy Haase and Paul Naron, owners of Shell Lumber, who heard of Shakespeare Miami's plight, offered up Shell Lumber as the free venue to allow the show to go on! Shell is an integral part of Shakespeare every year (they supply the material and help build the sets at no cost).

Last April, Solar Dogs held a concert "in the woods" and it was an incredible success. Way back in the lumber yard, there is plenty of room for stage productions (by the way, the Solar Dogs will be back at Shell Lumber this April, too. Details to come.)

So this year, a sword fight heavy production of Romeo & Juliet is taking place at Shell Lumber from January 21 to 30. The Orlando Shakespeare Theatre made the costumes and Joey Costello choreographed the fast moving sword duels.

Romeo, played by Nick LaMedica (shown here with Bree-Anna Obst, who is playing Juliet), is an exceptionally fine Shakespearean actor that director Colleen Stovall literally found online (she saw a YouTube video of his acting). Nick was just coming off of a run of Romeo and Juliet at the American Globe Theatre in NYC and was up for an adventure in Miami. Even though Nick’s 22 and out of college, he looks about 15, which brings such an honesty to the role.

They are doing their part to help "tourism," too, since Nick is bringing a large contingent of friends, fans and family from New York City to Miami to see the show. Bree-Anna is from Melbourne, Australia, and her family is flocking here from Down Under, too.

The show opens on Friday, January 21 and closes on January 30. Performances are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 pm and at 2:00 pm on Sundays. As always, they are doing two free school shows; one on January 28 at 10 am at the Barnacle State Historic Park and one also on the 28th at noon at Imaculata LaSalle High School. On Saturday, January 22, they are hosting an event for children ages 3 to 10 at The Barnacle called Tea With Mr. Shakespeare, where the company members will host a story hour in costume. Last year some kids came in full costume; princesses, knights and for some reason, Spider-man.

All shows are free, no tickets necessary, bring a picnic, low lawn chairs and your family. Chairs will be available for rent for $1.00. Parking is free on site. For more info, please visit:
