Dr. Burney is the Director of Conservation at the National Tropical Botanical Garden, headquartered in Hawaii. A paleoecologist and conservation biologist whose lifelong interest has been the interactions between nature and humanity, he has over 30 years of practical experience in conservation.
He is the author of more than 100 scientific articles and monographs, many concerning the processes of extinction and environmental change, and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to write about his research in a coastal cave on Kaua‘i (published by Yale University Press 2010).
“We are so pleased to host Dr. David Burney for this lecture,” said Ann Parsons, Director of The Kampong. “This is an incredible story of two decades spent exploring and documenting an important archaeological site in Kaua‘i. Dr. Burney is passionate about his work, and his amazing images and stories are sure to fascinate,” she added.
The Kampong (4013 S. Douglas Road) will open at 6:30 pm with a reception sponsored by Whole Foods Market. The lecture begins at 7 pm. Attendance is free to Kampong Fellows and Members, and tickets for the public are $10. Please call 305.442.7169 to make advance reservations and to purchase tickets.
