Whale Wars activist Pete Bethune at MiaSci
As part of the “Educate. Activate!” campaign launched by Oceanic Defense, famed Whale Wars activist Pete Bethune, shown above, will be presenting a lecture at the Miami Science Museum (MiaSci) (3280 S. Miami Avenue) on Saturday, October 16. The lecture, which focuses on the idea that one person can make a difference, will take place in the MiaSci theater from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. It is open to the public (with paid admission to the Museum).
In partnership with www.Keeppaddlin.org, Oceanic Defense hopes to promote the idea that ocean protection takes an army of individuals working together through community awareness and education outreach.
Pete is an avid promoter of bio fuels and marine conservation. In 2005, he set out to prove that hydrocarbon fuels could be replaced by renewable fuels and could contribute to sustainable living. From this idea came Earthrace, a 78 foot tri-hull wave piercer, designed to break the world record for circumnavigating the planet and bring attention to the potential of bio-diesel as an alternative fuel. In 2008, Peter and his crew succeeded in beating the former world circumnavigation record by over two weeks.
The Museum is open every day from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Admission is free for MiaSci members and children under 3; students (with valid ID), seniors (62+) and children 3 – 12, $10.95; adults are $14.95. Parking is free. For info, please call 305-646-4200.
