Galt and Simmons are subject of Kampong lecture
A globally recognized researcher, Dr. David Lee specializes in tropical botany and has done extensive study on the nature and function of plant color. His talk will focus on Dr. Eleanor Galt and Mr. Albion Simmons, who purchased the Coconut Grove property (now The Kampong) in 1892 and were its stewards for 18 years. This image is taken from a group photo at a Mary Brickell tea party in 1893, the photo was taken by Grove pioneer Ralph Middleton Munroe.
“We are so pleased to welcome Dr. David Lee back to The Kampong,” said Ann Parsons, Director of The Kampong. “This is a fascinating story about the early history of The Kampong, and early Coconut Grove pioneers Dr. Galt, the first woman to practice medicine in the Miami area, and her husband, Mr. Simmons.”
Gates will open at 6:30 pm with a reception sponsored by Whole Foods Market. The lecture begins at 7 pm and attendance is free to Kampong Fellows and Members. Tickets for the public are $10. Please call 305.442.7169 to make advance reservations and to purchase tickets.
