Kampong begins this year's Lecture Series
The Kampong (4013 S. Douglas Road) is kicking off it's 2010-11 Lecture Series on Thursday, September 16 with Dr. Chad Husby who will share his insight on "Survivors From an Ancient World: The extraordinary flora of New Caledonia."
Dr. Chad Husby is a Collections Manager and Botanist at the Montgomery Botanical Center, a research and conservation botanical garden in Miami. Chad’s botanical interests focus on ancient plants, especially conifers, cycads and ferns. He visited New Caledonia in 2008 to explore the flora and present at a conference on the island’s medicinal, aromatic and ornamental plants.
New Caledonia, an island in the South Pacific the size of New Jersey, is one of the greatest biodiversity hotspots on earth. The floral diversity of the island is especially unique, with five endemic families, the richest conifer flora in the world, the world’s only parasitic conifer, and what may be the most primitive flowering plant, Amborella. His presentation will focus on the amazing richness of primeval conifers in New Caledonia and conservation threats to the flora of the island.
The Kampong will open at 6:30 pm with a reception. The lecture begins at 7 pm tickets are public are $10 and free to Kampong Fellows and Members. Please call 305.442.7169 to make advance reservations and to purchase tickets.
