Inaugural "Sailapalooza" to take place Sunday

Uniting Foundations for Disability Awareness is presenting the inaugural "Sailapalooza" event on Sunday, July 11. This is open to able-bodied and disabled guests, who are invited to enjoy a day of sailing, kayaking, boating and island exploration. There will be art, music and lots of barbecue at Shake-A-Leg Miami (2620 South Bayshore Drive).

The highlight of Sailapalooza will be presented by the Darrell Gwynn Foundation of custom powered wheelchairs to two deserving South Floridians.

Maria Gonzalez, 20, of Hialeah is living with spina bifida, one of the most common permanently disabling birth defects in the U.S. Darrell will help Maria realize her goal of attending college by presenting her with a new $18,000 wheelchair. Michael Adam is a senior at North Miami Beach Senior High School who is orthopedically impaired, a condition that adversely affects learning and/or educational performance. Referred to The Darrell Gwynn Foundation by his teacher, Adam will receive a $17,000 chair from Gwynn that will improve his mobility and enhance his lifestyle.

The event is open to the public from 1 to 5 pm for a donation of $25 for adults and $10 for children 13 and under.

The benefiting organizations include
The Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Shake-A-Leg Miami, Spinal Cord Injury Support Group, The Sabrina Cohen Foundation for Stem Cell Research and Traumatic Injury Support Foundation, all 501(c)3 non-profit organizations
“Supporting others is what The Darrell Gwynn Foundation is all about and, thanks to the ongoing generosity of our donors, we are able to give both of these deserving young people a new perspective on life,” said Darrell.

A former National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) champion, Darrell dedicated his life to prevention of spinal cord injuries after a near-fatal accident in 1990. Now 48 and living near Fort Lauderdale, he oversees the foundation he and his wife Lisa established to raise money earmarked for educational programs on paralysis, providing long-term health services for spinal cord injury patients and funding paralysis research.
