Rain keeps many away from Gallery Walk

grove1
Last night's Gallery Walk started off with good intentions, but then the heavens opened up and all the people were scared off by the rain. It's amazing how in South Florida everyone scatters when it rains. Can you imagine if that happened in Seattle or other rainy cities? They would have no culture. A few hearty souls stuck around for the art and Theresa Calluori and Debra Starbuck braved the rain to handed out Gallery Walk flyers to those who passed by.

AnnaMaria and I had our yearly Gemini party, only we were about 20 Geminis short and ended up celebrating with the Bahamian group in for Goombay this weekend, which actually ended up being even better. We watched the Junkanoo video's which AnnaMaria had taken earlier in the day with the actual Junkanoo performers who were at our party, along with the Consul General and others.

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery usually draws a large crowd and last night was no exception in spite of the rain. The crowd would have been larger if the skies were clear, but it was still a nice crowd.

They are featuring high school students' art and that always brings out families and young art lovers who really do get into the art and enjoy it.

Andres Ocampo, who just graduated from the Academy of Arts and minds right here in Coconut Grove, won scholarship money last night from the Arts Festival Gallery. He is on his way to the prestigious Pasadena Art Center College in California now. He is standing in front of one of his pieces called "Glory, Glory."

This untitled piece is by Marianne Grobman, senior from Krop Senior High. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. Stop by to see the students' art which is on display until the end of the month. They are located in the Mayfair arcade, by the bull sculpture.
